Get Back in Shape After the Birth of Your Baby - A Gentle 10 Point Plan



  1. Be especially kind to yourself in the first weeks after your baby is born. Your body has gone through huge changes and it's unrealistic to expect that you can snap back into your old shape straight away. Unrealistic expectations sets you up for failure and disappointment, but you CAN get your figure back if you are patient and take it one step at a time.



  2. Forget drastic dieting and treat your body to healthy nourishing food and gentle exercise to get back in shape. You will naturally lose some weight during the first few weeks as your uterus shrinks. Breast feeding alone will allow you to lose weight at 1lb a week if you eat normally and healthily as it uses up 500 calories a day, but you do need to eat enough so that your milk does not dry up. Plan on losing the remainder at a gentle pace.



  3. Your tummy will look very sad after the birth, flabby and saggy. Don't worry you can soon get things looking good again. Do all the post-natal exercises and gentle exercise recommended by your health-care professionals during the first 6 weeks to get your tummy back in shape. After that check with them that it is OK if you want to embark on a more strenuous exercise routine. Once your doctor says its OK to exercise, one of the best ways to retighten your muscles is a simple yoga move. Stand with your feet apart, hands on thighs. Breathe out fully and then pull your tummy muscles in and up as hard as you can, holding for a count of 10. If you do this a few times a day before breakfast you'll soon see results. Don't do this during pregnancy.



  4. The first few weeks with your baby are precious and not the time to start injuring yourself by doing too much too soon. Whatever you decide to do, don't go mad in the first week you're allowed to exercise normally. Build up gradually as if you'd not exercised before.



  5. If you are not able to get back to the gym or to do whatever activity you used to do now that you have a baby to care for, investigate home-exercise programs and videos you can do while your baby sleeps or organise your partner or friend to watch your baby for a short time while you exercise. You will need to be a bit more resourceful and determined to fit in your exercise but you can find a way if you really want to.



  6. Walking with your baby is always great - you both get fresh air and out of the house and you get fitter while your baby is soothed by the movement of the pram. You could also use a baby carrier to keep your baby close to you while you walk. This is especially soothing for a restless baby. Aim to walk for 30 minutes to an hour each day.



  7. You may find yourself tempted to snack more if you are alone at home with your baby especially if you are used to being out and about at work every day. Make sure you have lots of healthy snacks around such as fruit and avoid buying unhealthy snacks so you are not tempted. You may be better to plan 5 or 6 mini-meals rather than snacking all day AND having your usual lunch and dinner.



  8. Take the time to plan simple meals for the next few days before you go shopping. This will help you avoid the "What's for dinner"/"Oh no, I haven't defrosted it?" / "Better send out for pizza again" Syndrome. This is not the time to plan elaborate recipes but try and avoid too much processed junk food because you do have time for a simple omelette, pasta sauce, baked potato or salad



  9. If you start a plan to get in shape and it all feels like too much, simply restart it when you feel up to it - there's no need to beat yourself up over anything. Most women feel a bit tired and stressed with a new baby so don't put more pressure on yourself. All in good time. If you feel really down remember and seek help - post-natal depression is very real and quite common.



  10. Reward yourself. You've been through a lot - your body has changed, your hormones are in disarray. Whatever you do that helps towards getting back in shape (a walk, a healthy snack, your tummy exercises or whatever) give yourself a pat on the back. A few moments to yourself can be a great reward if you have someone who will care for your little one for a while.

Pregnancy and Physical Activity


Regular physical activity is important for many women during pregnancy to have a healthy living lifestyle. You can reap huge benefits during delivery if you undertake regular exercises. In most cases, moderate exercise is safe and beneficial for both mother and the baby. In general, at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day is recommended. You should aim to do a mixture of both aerobic physical activity and muscle-strengthening physical activity. If you are not used to regular exercise, you can start with gentle physical activities and then gradually increase the duration and intensity of the exercises.

What type of exercises should I do whilst pregnant?

Pregnant women should try to do a mixture of both aerobic and muscle-strengthening exercises.

• Aerobic activity is any activity that makes your heart and lungs work harder such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming or dancing. Aerobic activity is something which makes you mildly out of breath and sweaty.

• Muscle strengthening activity includes weight training, climbing stairs, lifting or carrying shopping, yoga or similar resistance exercises that strengthen major muscle groups.

What kinds of physical activities are recommended during pregnancy?

Being pregnant does not mean that you should restrain yourself from doing any kind of physical activities. However, you do need to be sensible about what type of physical activity you do.

In general, any physical activity which will improve or maintain your physical fitness as well as your health is recommended. It includes:

• Everyday activities. Such as walking, regular domestic chores, gardening etc

• Active recreational activities. Such as dancing, swimming etc

• Gentle Sports: Such as playing tennis/ badminton and regular exercise sessions at the gym etc

Pelvic floor exercises are also important during pregnancy and are advised for all pregnant women. These help in strengthening the pelvic floor muscles which comes under strain when you are pregnant and at the time of labour.

What are the benefits of physical activities during pregnancy?

Regular Physical activity can help you to:

• Improve stamina and increased lung capacity

• Have less fatigue & better sleep

• Maintain healthy weight during and after delivery

• Less chances of developing back ache which occurs frequently in pregnancy

• Avoid constipation

• Less risk of developing swelling of feet, ankles or hands

• Avoid anxiety & depression

• Have a reduced risk of developing diabetes during your pregnancy (gestational diabetes). In women who do develop diabetes during their pregnancy, regular physical activity may help to improve the control of their diabetes.

• Perhaps, have a shorter labour and be less likely to have problems or complications during the delivery of your baby.

What precautions are to be taken while doing exercises in pregnancy?

Special care should be taken while choosing exercise routine as there are many physical changes during pregnancy which can lead to injury if not taken care of. This includes increased blood volume and hormonal changes that can affect the muscles and ligaments, change is mobility of joints and ease of breathing during pregnancy.

• Exercising while lying on your back after 16 weeks of pregnancy can make you feel light-headed and you may faint as vena cava, one of the main blood vessels of your body gets compressed by the developing baby.

• Experts also recommend that you should be careful if you are undertaking activities where you may be more likely to lose your balance and fall, injuring your abdomen, and possibly injuring your developing baby. You are advised to avoid activities such as horse riding, downhill skiing, ice hockey, gymnastics and cycling whilst being pregnant.

• Contact sports such as squash, judo, boxing, kickboxing etc must be avoided as you have a chance of being hit in your abdomen.

If you are joining exercise class that is not designed for pregnant women, do let your trainer know that you are pregnant. Also, you should always remember to warm up and cool down at the beginning and at the end of each session.

How much physical activity should I do whilst pregnant?

If you are used to doing regular exercises before you were pregnant, you can try to keep up with your usual level of physical activity for as long as you can and feel comfortable while doing it. However, it is normal that as your pregnancy goes along, you may have to take it easy and have to slow down the intensity of your physical activity. You may not be able to exercise to the same level as before. A good goal to aim for is at least 30 minutes of aerobic physical activity per day whilst you are pregnant. Keep your exercise sessions to no longer than 45 minutes.

If you are not used to doing regular physical activities before pregnancy, you should not just suddenly start an intensive exercise programme. Start with 15 minutes of physical activity three times a week and then increase this gradually to 30-minute sessions four times a week and finally to 30 minutes every day. Listen to your body and act accordingly

You should aim to become warm, mildly out of breath, and mildly sweaty during your exercise sessions. You should be able to complete a sentence comfortably and hold a conversation whilst you are doing physical activity. If you can do this, you are probably exercising at the right level or intensity. If you become too breathless to talk whilst you are doing physical activity, it probably means that you are doing too much and you have to slow down.

When is it not safe to exercise?

Physical activity during pregnancy is safe for most women. Doctor's advice should be taken as they will be able to guide the expecting mothers better depending upon their medical history. You must seek medical advice before starting physical activity if you have;

• Known heart & lung problems

• Vaginal bleeding that continues throughout the pregnancy

• High blood pressure during pregnancy

History of pre mature labour in the past

• Any signs of preterm labour during this pregnancy

• Premature rupture of the membranes

• Known weakness of their cervix (cervical incompetence), including women who have had a stitch in their cervix

• Low lying placenta for more than 20 weeks

• Signs that their baby may be small-for-dates (Intra uterine growth retardation) on ultrasound scanning during this pregnancy

• A twin or multiple pregnancy (triplets, quadruplets, etc)

• Poorly controlled epilepsy

• Poorly controlled thyroid disease during pregnancy.

• Severe anaemia during pregnancy.

• Bone or joint problems that may affect your ability to exercise.

• Poorly controlled diabetes during pregnancy

Is there any reason why I should stop exercising during pregnancy?

As mentioned above, there are many benefits of doing regular physical activity whilst you are pregnant. However, there are a few things that you should be careful about. You should stop exercising and seek urgent medical attention if you develop:

• Excessive shortness of breath

• Chest pain or palpitations

• Dizziness

• Painful contractions, signs of labour or any leakage of amniotic fluid (waters breaking)

• Heavy vaginal bleeding

• Excessive tiredness

• Severe abdominal pain

• If the movements of the baby have become less than normal

• Calf pain or swelling with redness

When can I start exercises after delivery?

It is generally advised that you can start walking, doing pelvic floor exercises and stretching immediately after birth provided that you have had a normal vaginal delivery with no complications. You should gradually increase your physical activity to build up to your pre-pregnancy levels. If you have had a Caesarean section, you should ask your doctor when it is safe for you to start physical activity. In general, it is not usually recommended to start until after your postnatal check at 6-8 weeks. Postnatal exercise does not reduce the quantity or the quality of your breast milk or have any harmful effects on your baby.

Post natal exercises can help you to:

Postpartum Depression - When Infants Fail to Thrive


Many persons see postpartum depression as an illness affecting just the mother. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The whole family encounters relationship issues that alter family dynamics considerably. Depressed mothers who do not seek treatment often place their infants in danger of experiencing severe or deadly delays in growth and development.

The medical name for this complex problem is non-organic failure to thrive. Non-organic means that there is no medical cause for the infant's delays. As a result of the mother's postpartum depression, she often fails to care for the baby's nutritional and emotional needs. Even though the infant may cry out in hunger at first, he or she often loses interest and stops relating to other people. This disorder may result in malnutrition, starvation, or even death.

Physicians use growth charts to follow a baby's physical growth in height, weight, and head size. If the infant is healthy at birth, his or her size fits within the normal values on these charts. If the infant starts to have severe growth delays, the problem will appear when comparing his or her development against normal growth charts. If the baby's progress is below the fifth percentile, doctors get worried.

Other signs often appear before the baby's growth problems reach this crisis stage. Most infants who grow at a normal rate are curious about their surroundings. In contrast, infants who do not thrive have little or no interest in their surroundings. These infants typically do not make noise or words; they have quit trying to respond to their caretakers.

How serious is this condition? If not treated properly, a child may starve to death. Even if the baby grows enough to remain alive, his or her heart, lungs, and brain do develop properly. Furthermore, even if they are treated, these children never "catch up" entirely. They often acquire social problems or eating conditions, even after they begin to have their needs met.

Babies who failure to thrive often become critically ill from starvation. They usually are in the hospital for several weeks at a time. In some cases, they become so weakened that feeding from a bottle is too tiring. They get feedings through a tube inserted in their stomachs, or even in a vein to get food!

The saddest aspect of this condition is that it is so preventable. If mothers with postpartum depression identify this problem at its onset, they can get treatment and never expose their fragile babies to these terrible dangers. Indeed, studies have shown that nine-tenths of the women who suffer from depression who get treatment will find healing!

A variety of approaches is used to treat postpartum depression. Many doctors use medications, such as antidepressants. These medicines are costly. They should also be avoided in nursing mothers. Moreover, antidepressants can cause thoughts of suicide; these medications should be prescribed with extreme caution.

Usually, doctors recommend psychotherapy instead of or along with medications. Counseling, however, can be expensive. In addition, it can be time-consuming, and several weeks may go by before this therapy begins to help. Regrettably, depending on the severity of the woman's depression, this much time may be too much to prevent harm to the infant. If the baby begins to experience delayed growth, extra therapies may be required.

Luckily, other non-drug treatment options can be used. Two innovative, beneficial methods that typically yield results much more quickly than psychotherapy, and are much less dangerous than medication, are Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP and hypnotherapy for depression. NLP and hypnosis usually begin to work after only one session. In addition, they are much less expensive than alternative methods.

Mothers who think they might have postpartum depression need to get treatment at once so that their infants are not at risk for critical growth problems. The severity of the consequences for the infant mandates that any approach work quickly, and have a high rate of effectiveness. NLP and hypnosis for depression are inexpensive, work quickly, and are highly effective. Therefore, both of these treatments are perfect for treating postpartum depression.

Your Choices For Maternity Care


Before you should choose a maternity care you should ask yourself:

o Would you prefer to receive most of your ante and postnatal care at your GP's surgery, and go to the hospital just once or twice during your pregnancy, and then to give birth to your baby in the Consultant Unit? (This is called 'shared care')

If you have a GP Unit at your local maternity hospital, your GP may be able to care for you there when your baby is born or you can be looked after by the hospital midwives.

Some GPs are willing to book you for a home birth and to provide all your maternity care before, during and after the birth of your baby. (However, you don't have to have a GP cover you for a home birth. A midwife has the legal right and practical skills to take sole responsibility for your maternity care provided no complications arise.)

o Would you prefer to receive most of your ante and postnatal care from a small team of midwives whom you can get to know and one of whom will help you give birth? (Most areas are now starting to organise midwives into teams so this should be a real option for you.)

o Would you prefer to receive care from a community midwife who will look after you during your pregnancy, go into hospital with you to help you give birth and then accompany you home with your baby a few hours afterwards?

This is called the Domino scheme. It's not available everywhere; you need to ask your midwife or the Director of Maternity Services at your local Maternity Unit about having this kind of care.

There are increasing numbers of hospital-based schemes running now which arrange for each mother to be cared for by just one midwife. Ask if such a scheme is running at your hospital.

Should I Take Medication for My Postnatal Depression?


Whether your journey here has been slow and torturous or brutally quick, you have arrived at a diagnosis of postnatal depression. If you have self-diagnosed, through a variety of research and checklists, your next step may be to decide whether or not to take this to your doctor. If it was your doctor who helped you come to the conclusion that you are suffering from PND, they will have run through your treatment options and are waiting for you to decide which route to follow.

Please note that I am NOT a medical practitioner, and the suggestions I make below are all dependent on your seeing a GP for professional guidance.

I'm scared to see a GP - they'll make me take drugs!

No ethical medical professional will ever force you to go down a treatment route that makes you uncomfortable or goes against your wishes. Just because you present with symptoms of PND does not mean they will force you to take brain-altering medication. They will give you the facts - how they normally treat women with PND, what the pros and cons are of each type of treatment, success rates, etc. If they do not readily offer this information, ask. You may find it helpful to prepare a series of questions and take them with you in a notebook. Sometimes talking to a stranger about our rawest emotions can be overwhelming and it's easy to forget what we really want to know.

How do I know if antidepressants are right for me?

Honestly? You won't know until you try. Sometimes our resistance is really about coming to terms with the fact that we're not very well. It can bring up a lot of guilt and shame and sense of failure.

"If I was a good mother I wouldn't need to take medication to feel better".

"As a new mother I should be blissed out on love for my son/daughter - if I start popping pills it means I don't love my baby enough".

It might seem hard to separate the issues, but your anxiety about motherhood and a sense of failure or guilt needs to be addressed while you are getting better. Taking antidepressant drugs does not mean you are a bad mother. Seeking help to improve your psychological wellbeing is actually a sign that you care enough about your baby to be emotionally there for them. This is the case whether you take medication or choose an alternative route. What matters is that you are actively helping yourself to improve your situation.

If I choose to take antidepressants, won't I get hooked?

A lot of people worry about this one. I certainly did before deciding to give them a go. It's true that you need to take your medication for a sustained period of time for it to be effective. Many GPs will recommend you continue for six months after you feel better to ensure the symptoms don't return. During this time (typically a year or two) your body will get used to the chemical mix in your system. So it's normal to worry that you will become dependent on them to feel normal. Talk to your GP upfront about your worries. They should be able to tell you the likelihood of experiencing difficulty reducing your dose or any withdrawal symptoms people may experience.

It used to be very common a few decades ago to experience difficulties coming off medication - but scientific advances, combined with a wide range of different types of antidepressants on the market, mean that it's less of an issue. Your GP should also be able to tell you how they help others reduce their dose, and how long their patients tend to take before coming off them completely. Fear of becoming dependent is perfectly legitimate, but don't let it paralyse you into inaction.

What reactions can I expect when I first take them?

Depending on the type of antidepressant you are prescribed, you may experience a variety of symptoms, from insomnia and heart palpitations to fatigue and restless legs. Your GP should let you know before you start your course what physical and psychological reactions you might expect. Most reactions last just a few days, and should level out within the week. If they continue beyond this time, or you experience severe anxiety or mood swings, go back to your doctor, who may try you on a different type of medication.

It's normal to feel frustrated if this occurs - having made the decision to take antidepressants, you want them to take effect as quickly as possible, and trying different types can feel like you're taking one step forward and three steps back. But if you find the right one, you should start to feel your mood lifting after about 10 to 14 days. When you're desperate, that can feel a lifetime away, but if you can ride it out, there should be light at the end of the tunnel.

What if I decide not to take antidepressants?

If you research the various types of medication your GP suggests and decide not to go down that route there are other avenues open to you to help you feel better. A non-exhaustive list of options includes:

Alternative remedies -The best known and researched is St John's Wort, a herbal compound that has been shown to have similar mood-lifting properties of chemical antidepressants with fewer side effects.

Food and exercise -Good nutrition and exercise will help improve low mood in those with mild anxiety or depression. Foods said to improve depression include garlic, oily fish, brazil nuts and coffee (in moderate doses). To make a difference to mood, exercise should increase the heart rate, such as swimming, running or walking fast. Bear in mind, however, that recent research has shown that exercise only helps mild to moderate depression and has no effect at all on severe depression.

Talking therapies- Many people taking conventional antidepressants will benefit from talking therapies such as counselling or CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and they should be seen as complementary to all types of treatment, rather than a straight alternative. However, if you are sure you do not want to take any kind of medication, it is important to acknowledge and treat your condition in some way. Talking to someone about your feelings should help you identify areas of change and see more clearly what action you can take to turn things around.

Taking medication for postnatal depression is very common, but please remember it doesn't mean you have failed as a mother. Rather, it can offer you the emotional resilience to see your situation more clearly and work out what actually needs to change in your life, providing your with the energy and motivation to carry those things out. Once you are able to make those changes, your need for medication will reduce, and your ability to accept and manage your emotions and behaviour will radically improve.

In most cases, the experience of accompanying and assisting your bitch through pregnancy, labor, whelping, and weaning is a rewarding and joyful experience. Sometimes, however, things do not always go as planned. Post-partum care for your dog is as important for her survival as it is for humans. For this reason, one should have an understanding of what might be expected in the event something goes wrong. Education and quick action could be the difference between life and death.

Perhaps one of the most immediate dangers to your bitch after giving birth is hemorrhaging. Most births will exhibit large amounts of watery fluid that can range in color from clear to green, and pink to black. These are typically normal. However, if your dog shows signs of bleeding- perhaps from a ruptured or prolapsed uterus, then she needs immediate emergency veterinary treatment. X-rays or ultrasounds may be used to determine what the cause of the bleeding is, and in some cases surgery or blood transfusions might be necessary.

Mastitis, an infection of milk-producing tissue, can be easily detected by hand. If the base of one or all of your dog's glands are hot and tender, this may be a sign of mastitis. Often, the bitch may be unwilling or reluctant to allow puppies to nurse- especially on that gland. Grasping the nipple by the base, gently squeeze with your thumb and forefinger. If a thick yellow substance emerges, possibly tinted with blood, then mastitis is likely. As with hemorrhages, mastitis is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment- especially if the bitch is vomiting. Treatment of mastitis is aggressive and needs to be initiated as soon as possible.

Eclampsia is a serious condition caused by the malfunction of the parathyroid gland. This gland regulates blood calcium levels. If your bitch is restless, nervous, distressed, suffers convulsions- especially on her side with intense leg movements, weakness, or coma, your dog may be suffering from eclampsia. This condition can progress over a period of minutes or hours. If left untreated, the bitch will almost certainly die. However, if she has not slipped into a deep coma, this condition can be reversed in just a few minutes with an intravenous calcium infusion. It is a very simple procedure and produces immediate results. It should be noted that some dogs do not respond well to this treatment if they have been suffering it for a prolonged period of time. For this reason, it is important to seek immediate treatment.

Metritis can have a number of causes, not the least of which can be poor whelping practices such as a dirty environment or bedding. It can also result from retained placentas or pups. This infection of the uterus will typically follow a prolonged labor, but not in all cases. Symptoms include a foul smelling discharge from the vulva, fatigue, vomiting, fever, and dehydration. Left untreated, this infection can spread to other areas of the body, causing the dog to become toxic. Veterinary treatment is crucial. Treatment involves surgery in most cases, although there are more conservative, but riskier, alternatives.

Pregnant At 45: The Four Steps To How I Conceived Naturally At Age 45


As a child, if anyone had told me I'd be pregnant at 45, I would have told them they were nuts. I'd done the math. I knew that by the year 2000 I'd be 40 and much too old to really enjoy the millennium. Just thinking about that made me sad... after all, to a little kid, 40 is practically dead.

But becoming a first time mom at 46? Seriously?

And yet there I stood beside the bathroom sink, staring in disbelief at the white plastic wand and the little pink test strips shouting "positive". It was the summer of 2005 and I was 45 and pregnant!

It couldn't be! Two years before, the fertility doctor had told me that I probably had no viable eggs left.

So I tested again. Still positive.

For a woman who had never figured out whether she wanted children or not, pregnancy came not a moment too soon. Less than a year after my baby was born, the hot flashes started. Now, at age 52, I'm pretty much "done".

But I digress. How, you might ask, does a woman become pregnant at 45 without even trying? How is that even fair? I realize that plenty of women have moved mountains to try to conceive, spent months or years and sometimes tens of thousands of dollars just to get to that positive test result.

Well, I'd like to say that it was just dumb luck but that wouldn't help anyone, would it? Instead, as I thought back, I realized that everything I'd been doing for about 20 months prior had helped lead me to a successful pregnancy.

Here are the 4 basic steps I followed.

Step 1: Eliminating Stress

Everyone knows that a certain amount of stress keeps you on your toes. But too much of it can cause serious health problems. Stress depresses your immune system and ages you prematurely. It's been linked to depression, heart disease and even cancer. So it's no wonder that women under stress can have trouble conceiving.

I'd been under enormous career-related stress for almost 20 years. So, 20 months prior to becoming pregnant, I stepped away from my career and took some much-needed time off.

Step 2: Proper Nutrition

Even though my weight had never been an issue, my doctor was concerned that my cholesterol was high and getting higher. So I went to a nutritionist who made me keep a food diary. I had to stay away from too many sugars and fats and focus on eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

This was way different from my usual junk food diet. "Comfort foods" had always been my way of dealing with stress!

Step 3: Exercise

Instead of the butt-kicking karate classes I'd been used to, I decided to go for something a little more relaxing and meditative. I began with yoga and pilates twice a week, and added a little cardio training to keep my heart healthy.

The health benefits of yoga are well documented. (There must be a reason why this ancient form of exercise and mediation has survived for so many centuries!) I found that my exercise regimen helped me feel balanced, flexible, and strong.

Step 4: Acupressure

Since I'd been having chronic headaches for a year or so, I decided to try shiatsu massage. My shiatsu specialist, Anna, was from Russia where she had also been a midwife (I learned this AFTER discovering I was pregnant!).

Anna explained that Shiatsu was a form of acupressure and worked much like acupuncture but without penetrating the skin.

According to experts, women who are trying to conceive "can benefit from acupuncture and herbs because of the potential effect of improved ovarian and follicular function. Additionally, acupuncture can increase blood flow to the endometrium, helping to facilitate a thick, rich lining."**

She said that by focusing on certain pressure points, she could help "unblock energy" in my body so that it would "flow" better. This would help with my headaches and my overall energy level and sense of well being.

Anna also encouraged me to loosen up and have more fun!

With that advice in mind, on a warm Summer night in June, my husband and I cracked open a bottle of white wine and settled in for a relaxing evening of carefree fun. I'm usually a worrier: If I can't find a big problem, I'll magnify a little one. But I decided I was going to let go of all that petty stuff, even if it was just for the evening.

And that, my friends, was the night I became pregnant with my precious little boy.

I realize that not everyone can duplicate everything I did. Even those who CAN won't be guaranteed they'll become pregnant. But I do hope my story will help and inspire women who believe that becoming pregnant at 45, or at any age, is beyond the realm of possibility.

Baby Tips For the New Dad


If you are a new dad, your probably freaking out right about now. That cute little baby seems so calm and serene right up until the point of the late night wails that awaken you out of your deep slumber. Not only does your wife become more frazzled but, you feel virtually inept and helpless as to how you can assist your breastfeeding wife and this little bundle of joy. You need guidance, without having to feel like less of a man by asking others for advice. So here are some tips as to how to care for your new baby:

1. First, you must realize that the first couple of months may make you feel second in line. Only the mother can breastfeed, and her maternal instincts are kicking into overdrive by trying to care for the baby's every need. However, new dad, you may not be able to breastfeed the baby, but you can still feel important by changing the diapers, rocking the baby to sleep, caring for a crying baby, and etc... Do not let yourself feel second in line. Not only will you feel better about your parenting skills, your wife will greatly appreciate the help.

2. Since the baby's routine in the first couple of weeks is to eat, sleep, cry, and poop every couple of hours, alternate caring for the baby with your wife. You both will benefit greatly from this tagged team effort. You will not only get more sleep, you both will be less irritable and happier loving parents. If you work during the day, when you get home, watch the baby so she can sleep for a couple of hours. At night, let her care for the baby for a couple of hours so your refreshed for work. Make sure you offer this to your wife! This is a no lose situation. (Just remember, from here on out you will get less sleep than you ever had before the baby!)

3. This next one is very important. Not only has your wife's body changed in many ways, she may be suffering from the postpartum blues as her emotions act like a roller coaster. Simple things like telling your wife how beautiful she is, and how proud you are of her being such a great mother will make her feel happier, and lessen the brunt of insults that may fly your way. And if your caught in the cross hairs of these emotions, let the emotion-filled words slide right off your back and continue to show your love to her. This is the true test of being a good husband, dad, and a man.

4. Finally, no manual in the world can tell you how to raise the perfect child. You may learn what the best food to feed your baby is, or the latest safest toys, but parenting comes from first-hand experience. Everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect. Not your wife, your mother, father, or even you. Stop trying to live up to these idealistic fantasies of how to be the perfect dad. He does not exist. What you can do, is make a conscious decision to love your child endlessly no matter what, and to support him or her through thick and thin. Just try your best and at the end of the day hopefully you can learn from your mistakes.

Postpartum Complications - They Aren't All About Depression


As a first time mom-to-be, the biggest question in your head is which crib will look prettier in the nursery? The wooden one or the white one? I'm sure you're also having trouble picking out only seven of the ten baby outfits to buy!

But, if you're a single mom, your situation probably goes a little more like this: "Will I have the money to buy a stroller and car seat before the baby is born?"

All the information online for pregnant women seems to be about taking care of yourself during pregnancy. Eating healthy, exercising, writing a birth plan, hiring a doula; but does anyone ever prepare you for the physical complications you may face after? A good gynecologist may do this, but don't even depend on that. Family members and friends are so proud of you because you made it through the delivery; they leave you on your own and say everything is back to normal now. But, pay special attention to the small signs telling you it isn't.

If you are a single mom, the best thing you can do for you and your baby is set up a support team before the baby arrives. Not every woman's body naturally falls back into its pre-pregnancy state. Postpartum thyroid problems and hormone imbalances are way too common. Unfortunately, your gynecologist may never make you aware of these possibilities. If you develop one of these postpartum complications, you may not even recognize it; a strong support person will notice the things you miss.

Postpartum complications aren't all about depression; but sleep deprivation, a hormone imbalance, or thyroid problem can actually cause it! All of those physical complications can cause a brain fog; add the challenge of being a first time mother to the list and your thinking is going to get as foggy as an early morning drive on the highway! This is why it is extremely important to have a supportive person who you regularly communicate with; be open with them about anything happening physically or emotional difficulties you are experiencing. Once you experience sleep deprivation, it quickly hinders your ability to make decisions and think clearly; your support person will need to be knowledgeable.

Choosing a support person is like a game of "Red Rover": deciding who you want on your team. The person you pick will ultimately make you stronger or weaker. The only difference is your choice in "Red Rover" results in merely a win or loss; your choice in a support person effects much more.

For instance, it may not be wise to choose the person who sits through an entire television show and the next day cannot remember anything they watched! You may also want to pass on the arrogant family member who suggested the possibility of a miscarriage after learning of your pregnancy. Also, someone who is hardheaded and makes quick assumptions based on their own knowledge or lack thereof (ignorance) will only want to fight during a crisis. Please do not choose a support person who does not take what you say seriously.

Characteristics of a strong support person are someone who is smart, insightful, researches things, assertive, wants you to succeed, listens, encourages you to face your fears, and takes charge. A strong support person also seeks to understand and will hear what you are saying without making their own assumptions. A great support person would be someone who thinks for them self and tends to question those in authority rather than blindly accepting something at face value.

You have wanted to be a mother all your life; you had that beautiful baby for a reason. So you could raise her, of course! I want to insure you can do just that! Here are some of the symptoms both you and your support person should watch for which may indicate a postpartum hormone imbalance or thyroid problem:

o INSOMNIA (Waking up many times during the night for no reason, trouble falling asleep initially, trouble getting back to sleep, or waking early, suddenly inability to sleep during the day anymore. Before you were pregnant, it was normal to sleep the whole night through without waking. As long as your baby is sleeping through the night, that is still considered normal! Something else besides your baby is causing you to wake up- and that means something isn't right.)

o Frequent urination (don't write this off thinking it is a bladder infection)

o Night sweating (Waking up drenched in sweat)

o Inability to tolerate the cold (Inability to get warm with many blankets, need more winter jackets than those around you in cold weather and still cold, freezing feet at night, always seem to be colder than those around you. Pay extra attention to this if it used to be normal for you to go without a jacket in 50 degree weather)

o Allergies (morning sneezing, runny nose, etc.)

o Pressure in neck (may feel like swollen glands)

o Neck is tender when someone touches it

o Lose postpartum weight extremely fast or just rapid weight loss without dieting

o Extremely dry hair (you wonder if you need a new Chi since it isn't making your hair smooth anymore. Here is a clue: It might not be the Chi!)

o Skin suddenly becomes very dry and starts peeling

o Hair loss (Women generally lose hair postpartum. If you are aware of that fact and have a gut feeling you are losing way too much, don't ignore it.) Especially if you are losing so much you're getting bald spots!

o Diarrhea

o FATIGUE

o Bruises

o Memory loss and word finding difficulty (Continually talking about your baby while calling her another family member's name throughout the course of a day could be a clue! This is a sign of low estrogen or a thyroid problem.)

o Frequent sore throats

o Anxiety

o Depression

o Unusually long or short menstrual cycles

o Pain behind the eyes

o Swollen cheeks/face

o Gaining weight while exercising and eating healthy

o Trouble swallowing

o Brain fog

o Trouble making decisions

o Hoarse voice

If you are experiencing any of those symptoms and have a gut feeling something isn't quite right what do you do? Make an immediate appointment with a gynecologist you trust. Also ask each of your family members if they ever had any difficulties with their thyroid. If so, this is important information to give your doctor. What else should you do during your visit? Ask if they are skilled in treating thyroid disorders; even slight ones. Insist on full thyroid blood tests and hormone testing.

What is the next step? If your gynecologist tells you everything is normal, ask for a referral to an endocrinologist or find a natural doctor. Your blood tests can show your thyroid is within normal levels but the standard levels may not be your norm. A good doctor who understands the thyroid will acknowledge your symptoms along with your test results.

Don't listen to anyone who tells you just wait to see a doctor until you have insurance coverage; would you wait to take your baby to the doctor if she was sick? Postpartum hormone imbalances and thyroid problems are not to be taken lightly; the symptoms they cause are many and can quickly escalate. Get together with your support person and find a way for you to see the doctor now; the more sleep deprived you become, the less clearer your thinking will be.

Sleep loss should not be brushed off; sometimes the remedy isn't as easy as counting sheep! A postpartum hormone imbalance or thyroid problem can make it impossible for you to sleep nights at a time; leave the support people behind who don't believe something is possible just because they have never heard of it happening before. Especially if they don't take the time or make the effort to do the research to find out if it is possible! Ignorance and narcissism is egotistical and can easily hinder your health and future.

How Much is Your Birth and Postpartum Happiness Worth?


Recently a woman called me to inquire about my services, her first questions was, "How much is a doula?" It's hard to put a realistic price on that type of support. I have been at births for as little as four hours all the way up to 24 hours or more. So I told her I'd like her to consider how important it is for a woman to have someone who will be at the birth supporting her, encouraging her, and offering important information to ease her mind. A labor doula can help the partner experience this magical time with confidence and give him/her more time to spend with the laboring woman. A doula can run around doing things a partner usually does, or answer questions that may come up at the hospital or even during a home labor. A doula can show the partner how to help mom change positions, how to massage her. She can give the partner a much needed break during a long labor. Research has shown that with the help of a birth doula there is a much lower risk of: cesarean births, medical interventions, and the use of pain medications, and that a birth doula's knowledgeable help during delivery produces greater bonding with the newborn. [1] More research shows that with the help of a postpartum doula the risk of postpartum depression is much lower.

At home, a post partum doula can help the partner spend more quality time with mom and baby, cooking a meal, allowing them to take a nap, and helping mom with the sometimes challenging task of breastfeeding. She is a loving mentor who can show you ways to appease you baby, bathe him, burp him, swaddle her, and even play with her. A Doula is like the "village" support system revisited.

Today most women are isolated from the tribe; many have never seen a birth or seen a woman care for a newborn. Moms make the best doulas when and if they feel up to it, are around, and have the expertise to navigate hospitals. Unfortunately, up until recently most women have given birth in hospitals heavily sedated, and they were discouraged from breastfeeding. Other's were misguided by 'experts' who told them to let the baby cry and to feed only on schedule. Their ideas about birth and baby care might differ a great deal from what you want for yourself. Staying with our commitment to respect other people's right to act, we must make sure that who we ask, if not a professional, feels like helping not from a sense of guilt but from a place of confidence. Furthermore, some of us have a lot of 'emotional baggage' with our mothers and a neutral third party might be just the ticket for our labor, delivery, and postnatal help. Even back in the days were we all lived in the "village," it was often a neighbor or a cousin who helped women through this life-changing event.

Doulas work hard and for the most part this job is a vocation that comes directly from the heart. Doulas lose night so that you can rest, massage your back for hours while you are managing contractions, spoon feed you, wash you, whisper words of encouragement in your ears, help you remember your innate ability to give birth naturally and care for your child cry with you and bring you good cheer.

Ok, maybe I was preaching a bit, but I wanted her to understand the depth of the profession. Responding to the original question I asked her, "Think of how much you have spent on your wedding dress, honeymoon or the wedding reception. The investment was well worth the importance of the day. Now it's time to invest in another important time of your life: your labor, birth and the first weeks of your baby's life. You've had your honeymoon, now have your baby moon. A doula brings the village back to where it belongs".

She told me she had never quite looked at it that way.

If finances are a real challenge, help is available at a reasonable cost, birth and postpartum doulas who are going through their certification process charge little or nothing. They might not have a lot of experience but research has shown that just the presence of a compassionate woman is enough to change your birthing experience. Financial support

The U.S. Family and Medical Leave Act provides for 12 weeks of job-protected leave, but this only covers those who work for large companies.

Across the Atlantic, in Sweden, mothers can expect up to 16 months of parental leave at 80% pay. Moreover, women in Europe not only don't need as many cesareans or epidurals as Americans do, they have been empowered to stay home with their children and given the financial stability to be able to do so.

There have been several attempts at introducing paid maternity leave in the United States; the most recent was shot down by the Bush administration.

Five states - California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island - and Puerto Rico require employers to have temporary disability programs that pay benefits if the pregnancy is defined as a disability by a doctor. A few others have infant care programs that pay subsidies to low-income families for up to two years. Again, we have to be labeled "disabled," that is, un-able to be who we were meant to be, in order to obtain financial support from the government after a pregnancy.

The benefits available to you will depend very much on the state you live in. In 2002, California led the way in enacting paid family leave, and states such as Massachusetts and New Jersey are considering following suit. Not all states allow women to take short-term disability leave to cover pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.

Short-term disability (STD) is meant to cover your salary - or a portion of it - during the time that you're unable to do your job due to illness, injury, or childbirth. Many large employers and unions offer this type of disability, as do several states. (It's generally provided automatically to all employees or residents, not as an optional benefit that you must sign up for.) As a self-employed individual, you are eligible for State Disability Insurance (SDI) if you've elected to pay for the coverage and have done so for some period of time. You can address questions about whether you're covered to your state's EDD (the State Employment Development Department, that administers SDI).

If your state provides STD, you may pay a small amount out of each paycheck to cover your share. If your employer or union provides STD, the cost may be covered for you. If none of them provides STD, or if the coverage is insufficient, you can purchase your own policy or additional coverage through an insurance provider for a monthly premium.

Private STD insurance through your employer or a provider will generally pay between 50 and 100 percent of your salary for a certain number of weeks, depending on how many years you've worked for the company. (The maximum amount you can receive is usually capped.)

Six weeks is the standard amount of time covered for a pregnancy. Some plans allow more time if you've had complications or a cesarean delivery, and many also cover bedrest before birth.
State STD benefits typically cover half to two thirds of your salary, and coverage for pregnancy usually lasts from four to six weeks, though it can last up to 12 weeks.If both your state and your company offer STD, you may be required to use the full state benefit and have your employer's coverage make up the rest. You'll still end up with the same amount of pay as if you were getting your employer's full benefit, but you'll get it in two checks, one from the state and one from your company's provider. Make sure, one way or another, that you take some time off.

Your baby will be this little person who needs your full attention for such a short while! Even if he only seems to be eating, sleeping and pooping, in reality the nature of the welcome into the world that he experiences at this critical time will be the foundation upon which his character is built. I often take care of newborn babies and spend hours having long conversations with them. Moms comment that it is the very first time they noticed their baby opening their eyes and staying alert for so long. If you don't talk to your baby he will go to sleep, but you will be amazed when you engage him by looking him in the eye and talking directly to him, how curious and attentive he can be. Do you give more attention to the foundations of a house or to its decoration? Think about it!
