Chiang Mai Ram Hospital

This is the premium private hospital in Chiang Mai, and with the price range to match: but then again, you get what you pay for, though the Ram is not necessarily where you might want to have your check-up or physician appointment if you are a backpacker traveling on a limited budget. The Ram has comprehensive departments: Obstetrics/Gynecology, neurosurgery, pediatrician, dentistry, and all the specialists you would expect to find at any modern hospital. Indeed, Thai doctors tend to come with much better bedside manners and as a rule are friendlier than their western counterparts thanks to the emphasis on hospitality in Thai culture as well as the Ram's direction as part of the service sector. The staff speak fairly fluent English, usually give prompt, helpful service, and the hospital as a whole is one of the most reputable in the country (overseas patients who come to Thailand for cheaper medical expenses and operations are common). The Chiang Mai Ram is located in the Old City area, near the Central Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall, and boasts a roof that has been built to accommodate emergency helicopter landing. All reputable hotels in the city often have a contract with the Ram and default to them for ambulances and emergencies.

Rajavej Hospital

Located opposite a hotel, the Rajavej Hospital includes highly specialized service clinics, including liver disease clinic, hemorrhoids clinic, digestive system disease, diabetes/thyroid and cholesterol clinic, dermatology, geriatric clinic and a menopause clinic. Their service centers range from cancer to endoscopy, and they have surgeons who specialize in orthopedic surgery, oncology, and plastic surgery. Price range is somewhat less likely to traumatize your wallet, but the Rajavej Hospital's lobby and waiting area is also considerably less glamorous to look at then the Ram's.

McCormick Hospital

The McCormick Hospital is one of the few institutions in Chiang Mai and Thailand in general that are run under the umbrella of the Church of Christ, and as such is a Catholic hospital. Being considerably smaller than the Chiang Mai Ram, it accordingly offers rather fewer facilities and department, but the accommodation and nursing fees are also much cheaper, catering to more budget-conscious patients. General health check-ups, cancer check-ups, prenatal and postnatal care, cardiac care unit, and intensive care units are available. The McCormick is located in Wat Ket, on Kaeonawarat Road, close to the Dara Academy.

Lanna Hospital

The Lanna Hospital has been certified with ISO 9000. It offers 180 in-patient beds, and distinguishes itself by hiring staff who not only speak English but also Mandarin and Japanese in addition to, of course, Thai. While like others it offers general care across various health categories (cardiac care, back pain, Obstetrics/Gynecology, et cetera), it specializes in handling emergency cases. It is located on Chnag Klan Road, in the city center, and is one of the hospitals closest to the Night Market area.

All the hospitals listed adhere to ISO standards and are staffed by internationally trained doctors and nurses, many of which graduated from Ivy League schools and top medical universities of England and Switzerland. 2. Diet = Bad....Eat More = Good!

If you only take one piece of information away from this article, let it be this...Pregnancy is NOT the time to be dieting. Going on specific diets in order to stay in shape while pregnant is dangerous and can harm your baby's health as well as your own. Most diets were never designed to be used during pregnancy, so please avoid using them.

However, there are some things you can do concerning what you eat and when you eat it, that can help you to stay in shape while pregnant.

We've already discussed the importance of controlling your cravings, but did you know that eating more regularly can be more beneficial to you than eating less when trying to stay in shape while pregnant?

Snacking is probably the single biggest reason for excessive weight gain during pregnancy, so how can you beat it? Try eating smaller meals more regularly.

You see, the traditional 3 meals a day works well in theory, but as you know, with such hectic lifestyles these days the practice is very different. If you miss one of those meals, let's say lunch, you are now going several hours without eating...at which point the snacking begins.

Start your day with a good healthy breakfast that will set you up for the rest of the day. Make sure you eat a good lunch and dinner, but slightly smaller portions than normal. In between the 3 meals you can set designated times to have another "meal" - not really a full cooked meal as such, but something like a banana, small salad, pasta...stuff like that. 3. Exercise

Beyond making better food choices, getting regular exercise will help you to stay in shape while pregnant.

The amount of exercise you should be doing while pregnant depends on your situation and whether you were particularly active before your pregnancy. Therefore I recommend you consult your doctor before going straight out and busting your tail in the gym or something.

Types of exercises for pregnant women vary, but there is general agreement that stomach crunches and sit-ups are at best risky, and at worst dangerous, and should not be performed. As are any exercises that require you to lie on your front or put pressure on your belly.

Swimming is excellent and there are many pools with classes that cater for pregnant women. Yoga can also be performed which will help you to relax and relieve the back pains that are common while pregnant. Again, make sure you find a qualified Yoga instructor that specialises in pregnant women.

Florida Health Insurance - Maternity Benefit Options


Congratulations on your decision to have a baby. It is important that you are able to receive pre-natal healthcare and not be stressed about the costs of the birth. A normal no issues birth costs about $6000 not including pre-natal care. Complications such as a cesarean or premature will make the cost very much higher. Hopefully that does not happen but it can and that does not have to be a stressful issue.

The best way to take care of this is to be on an employer sponsored health insurance plan. All employer group plans cover maternity. Maternity benefits are not subject to any waiting period or pre-existing condition exclusions even if the person is already pregnant when she enrolls.

It is not necessary for both parents to be on an employer insurance plan. If the wife is working where the employees are offered the employer group insurance, then she should be enrolled on the insurance. If she is not enrolled then she should enroll during the open enrollment period for the insurance. You need to find out when that is and be sure to enroll. You only need to enroll yourself.

If the wife is not employed, her employer does not offer health insurance or she is not eligible for the employer's plan then she needs to check if the husband's employer offers group health insurance. This will be more expensive as the husband and the wife will have to be on the insurance. The husband would be on as the employee and the wife as the spouse. So, if the mother and/or father is employed the first place to check is if the employer has a group plan.

Florida Medicaid is an option for pregnant women. Qualifying for Medicaid is based on family income. For a pregnant woman the household income must be less than 185% of the Federal Poverty Level. A pregnant woman is counted as two persons when checking eligibility. For example if the woman is married than with no other children than the qualifying level would be based on the Federal Poverty Level for a three person family. To find more information on if you qualify for Medicaid in Florida you would need to contact your local Florida Medicaid office and meet with a counselor.

Florida has a program that offers insurance to pregnant women, CoverFlorida. CoverFlorida is a limited benefit plan. Maternity is covered as any other health condition. There is no special maternity benefit. The plan is available to pregnant women and they are not to a pre-existing condition limitation. It is not a free program and can be expensive. It is available to persons that have been uninsured for at least 6 months or have lost their employer group health insurance. This would be considered a last resort if the options above are not available. CoverFlorida changes often and so the best way to find information at the time you need it is to check online for CoverFlorida.

Maternity coverage is, in general, not offered on individual health insurance plans or the benefits are limited. Benefits may be available after the plan after it has been in effect for period of time, maybe 12 months and benefits might be stepped over time. For example, after 12 months on the plan, there might be $1000 of benefits, after 2 years, $2000 of benefits, after 3 years $3000 of benefits to the maximum plan benefit for maternity which might be $7000. If a person is already pregnant then individual health is not available to apply for by either the pregnant woman or the husband until after the baby is born. Insurance carriers have different underwriting guidelines for how long after the baby is born. If might be an option after the child's first well baby visit or after a period of time from birth such as 6 weeks.

Permanent international health insurance plans often include maternity benefits. International plans are available to US citizens that live, work, study or are otherwise outside of the US more than 6 months of the year. International insurance plans are available to non-US citizens worldwide including the US as long as they do not qualify for domestic US health insurance plans. Permanent international insurance can be worldwide coverage and include the US. The maternity benefits of these plans start after the plan has been in effect for 12 months. Plans are not approved if applied for while the person is pregnant. Underwriting is similar to US domestic individual health insurance plans. It is important to plan ahead as after a person is pregnant it is too late.

Maternity Reflexology - Reflexology to Help Induce Labour

People often use reflexology to rid the body of pain and stress by applying pressure to specific points on the hands and feet. It is a complementary therapy that is built on the belief that different areas of the body are aligned with specific areas on the feet. In a similar way to a massage, reflexology can provide relief from stress or discomfort. Reflexology can even have a role in the induction of labour. During the treatment the therapist uses pressure, stretch and movement to work through the whole foot. The therapist should take care to work within your comfort zone and reflexology should not be painful. The treatment begins with a relaxing foot massage. Reflexology does not tickle as it is a firm pressure to the feet. During the treatment you may feel different sensations in your feet and body, it may feel like a tingle or you may feel a slight pins and needles sensation. Sensitivity varies from person to person and from treatment to treatment. A reflexology session lasts up to one hour and should include a consultation and time to discuss the treatment afterwards. Induction of labour.

For most women labour begins naturally. Labour is "induced" when it is started artificially. Induction will be arranged when pregnancy has gone beyond 41 weeks and is considered overdue. Induction is usually offered sometime between 41 and 42 weeks to prevent your pregnancy continuing beyond this time. There are a number of methods used by midwives and doctors to induce labour. Regular treatments may also balance the hormones, regulate the digestive system, strengthen muscle and bone with renewed circulation and boost the immune system which is all very important during pregnancy. It is important to understand that if baby is not ready to come, nothing will shift it! It is not a magic cure, but at the very least it can help the body relax, and prepare itself for what is due to happen.

It is important to keep a positive mind in the run up to labour. If you begin to take on negative thoughts about delivering you baby this can raise stress levels and may delay your labour. Try to look forward with enthusiasm and joy to your new baby. In many cases we need to focus less on hurrying the babies and give the mom some love and emotional support. You can discuss fears with the therapist as they will be trained to understand the importance of positive thoughts. They may be able to introduce you to some helpful resources such as relaxation c.ds or positive visualisation techniques.

By choosing complementary therapy such as maternity reflexology to help induce labour women can feel more confident in their ability to deliver their baby. Being aware of options other than medial induction can help women to regain some control over their pregnancy rather than feeling at the mercy of the medical decision makers. Maternity reflexology is not a replacement for medical intervention but may help induce labour for some women.

Mom and Baby at 36 Weeks Pregnant


BABY DEVELOPMENT

Your baby is packing on the pounds. With only one week to go until he/she is full-term, your baby is gaining about an ounce a day. At week 36 of pregnancy, your baby might be 5.9 pounds from head to heel, and he/she may be 18.6 inches long (or longer).


  • Your baby is shedding lanugo and vernix this week. (Lanugo is the downy covering of hair that has covered his/her body since the second trimester, and vernix is the waxy substance that has protected your little one's skin from the amniotic fluid surrounding him/her.)

  • Space is limited in your womb, so your baby is spending most of his/her time curled up with the legs and arms folded against his/her body.

  • Your baby's lungs are structurally complete at 36 weeks pregnant, and they are producing surfactant (a substance that keeps the air sacs open when your baby takes his/her first breath). If your baby were born this week, he/she would probably help breathing because he/she may not have enough surfactant in his/her lungs yet.

  • At pregnancy week 36, most babies are in the head-down position - the best position for a vaginal birth. If your baby is in a breech position, your caregiver may suggest scheduling an "external cephalic version," a procedure in which your doctor tries to coax your baby into the head down position.

Fun Fact:

Did you know that some researchers believe that your baby actually releases a signal to triggers labor? Some scientists theorize that when a baby's brain is fully mature, it sends a signal to the fetal adrenal glands, which start to excrete the hormone cortisol, which then alter the metabolism of estrogen and progesterone and results in labor. Other researchers argue that the baby's lungs secrete signals indicating that they are mature, as well as enzymes, which release prostaglandins - hormones that help ripen the cervix and help the uterus contract.

MOM'S CHANGES

At 36 weeks pregnant, you may think that you can't get any bigger. But hang in there - you only have four more weeks of growing left. Maybe even less than that! Your baby is full term next week, so he/she can arrive anytime after 37 weeks and be considered fully developed and ready for life outside the womb.

You may have gained up to 32 pounds by now (though some women will gain more and others less). Remember to try to aim for the recommended weight gain for your body size. If you are an average sized woman, aim to gain between 25 and 35 pounds during pregnancy. Overweight women should only gain between 15 and 20 pounds, and underweight women can gain anywhere between 28 and 40 pounds.

Isn't it remarkable how fast your uterus and abdomen have stretched in less than nine months? When your pregnancy started, your uterus was only the size of a small pear and now it can hold a seven-pound baby!

Since your baby's due date is only four weeks away, you may notice that you are experiencing more Braxton Hicks contractions than ever. In the next few weeks, these false contractions may occur intermittently and become rhythmic and they may even get closer together. It might become more difficult to tell Braxton Hicks contractions apart from true labor pains.

Be sure to review the signs of labor with your doctor this week. You will want to know when he/she wants to hear from you. As a rule of thumb, your caregiver will probably want you to come to the hospital when you've been having contractions that come every five minutes (and last for a minute) for more than one hour. Of course, you should call your doctor right away if you notice a decrease in your baby's activity level, or if you are leaking amniotic fluid.

At pregnancy week 36, your baby may start to "drop" into your pelvis. This process is called lightning, and it typically occurs a few weeks before labor starts (for first-time moms). You may feel increased pressure in your lower abdomen, which makes waddling a necessity. If your baby is very low, you may feel lots of vaginal pressure and discomfort. You will notice that you have to go to the bathroom even more frequent once your baby drops.

If you have been feeling very uncomfortable these days, you may want to go for a light swim. Not only does swimming render you practically weightless, but it may also relieve a lot of the pain and stiffness that are common in the third trimester. You may also enjoy a warm bath. (But remember to avoid the hot tub - hot tubs are not recommended during pregnancy because they can raise your body temperature to 102 F and higher.)

Helpful Tip:

Stay away from air travel after pregnancy week 36 if possible. You never know when you will go into labor, and you won't want to give birth on a flight, since complications can occur when you least expect them.

At 36 weeks pregnant, it is still early for you to attempt any methods of self-induction. Your baby is still not mature and ready for life on the outside until next week, though you will want to wait until pregnancy week 40 before you try anything, due to the risk that your due date was miscalculated.

Remember that you should talk to your doctor before attempting any natural induction methods. You will not want to do any of these methods if you are having a high-risk pregnancy.

Natural methods of inducing labor include:


  • Nipple stimulation - The gentle rubbing or rolling of your nipples to encourage the start of contractions. The theory is that oxytocin (the hormone that causes contractions) is released when your breasts are stimulated.

  • Castor Oil - This is a strong laxative that may stimulate your bowels and cause contractions. Because this method probably doesn't work in many cases and the fact that castor oil can also cause nausea, diarrhea, and dehydration, we do not recommend this method of labor induction.

  • Sexual Intercourse - Making love may be the last thing on your mind these days, but sex can trigger oxytocin, which helps start contractions. In addition, semen contains a high concentration of prostaglandins (substances that help soften your cervix to get it ready to dilate). Sex is safe as long as your water was not broken. (You will want to avoid having sex if you have placenta previa, or if you are experiencing vaginal bleeding.

  • Walking - This is the easiest method of natural labor induction. Sometimes walking around and being upright gets the forces of gravity working with you and encourages your baby to move down into the cervix. There are no downsides of walking around. It's good exercise - just make sure you don't overdo it and exhaust yourself.

There is very little scientific evidence that will tell you how effective, or how safe, any of these methods are. If you are nearing 40 weeks of pregnancy, just try to be patient. Your baby will come when he/she is ready to.

Chinese Medicine And Pregnancy


Traditional Chinese Medicine first talks about pregnancy in the ancient book, the Nei Jing, back in the 1st or 2nd century BC, other famous texts since then also cover this topic.

INFERTILITY
The success rate in treating infertility is dramatic and it does so by bringing the patients body back to health. Many couples who go the route of IVF would have benefited greatly if they had first under gone Chinese Medicine treatment of herbs and acupuncture. One set of statistics put the number of women falling pregnant in this way above 80% and those who go on to IVF would have a better result and a healthier baby.

There are several trials that have been undertaken and practitioners who have specialized in this area. They often set out protocols that have worked for them such as different herbs at different times in the cycle and acupuncture at a set time to maximize ovulation etc.

I prefer to treat the person's constitutional weakness and leave protocols behind. Nearly always their will be a specific weakness preventing a successful pregnancy. In three recent cases I have concentrated on obstruction of the middle jiao i.e. - fullness across the region of the the diaphragm area preventing energy descending to the lower jiao i.e. - pelvic area. Unlike other therapies which seek to find specifics such as hormonal balance etc if you normalize qi and blood flows, then the body will make the corrections itself.

Herbs such as lu lu tong [liquid amber] can be used to unblock fallopian tubes. There are lists of herbs not to use in pregnancy to prevent possible miscarriage but in Chinese Medicine, if the herbs match the pattern then what is inappropriate for one will in fact prevent miscarriage in another. Having said that staying on the safe side is in order so cold descending herbs would normally be avoided such as da huang [rhubarb root]
I have not known any of my patients to have an epidural if they have had acupuncture during pregnancy.

MORNING SICKNESS
Both acupuncture and herbs work on morning sickness, once again different acupuncture treatments and different herbs will be used according to the individual's constitution.

BREECH POSITION & OVERDUE CASES
Acupuncture and moxibustion are very good to correct a breech presentation, any time after 34 weeks. It can also be used to induce birth when the baby is over due.

MISCARRIAGE
Rather than putting your feet up and hoping for the best, Chinese herbs can settle a restless foetus as can acupuncture but once again the reason for this happening must be diagnosed in Traditional Chinese Medical terms.

ECLAMPSIA AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Very good results can be achieved but these cases are best treated before we get to these symptoms which reflect a poor constitution going into the pregnancy.

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE OR HYPOTENSION
Both acupuncture and herbs can stimulate the system to normalise this symptom. It is usually the kidney and spleen energies that require tonifying.

DIABETES
Type two diabetes responds to Chinese medicine and in pregnancy is very much related to the kidney energy being insufficient.

POST NATAL DEPRESSION
In Chinese Medicine this is not a psychiatric problem but the result of the physical drain of child birth. In this situation the mother needed to build her constitution up before and during pregnancy and make sure help is at hand to prevent overly stressful situation in her life.

OVERDUE BABY
Chinese medicine uses both herbs and acupuncture to bring on a delayed birth.

MASTITIS
Herbs particularly make short work of mastitis problems.

POSTPARTUM
Postpartum problems respond very well to both herbs and acupuncture

LACTATION
Foods and herbs will increase milk supply and also reduce an over supply.

Should You Let Your Babysitter Drive Your Children?


Should you let your babysitter drive your children? There is no hard and fast correct answer to this question, since your circumstances as a parent may be entirely different to the circumstances of another. However, before handing over the keys to your car to any babysitter, there are some things you should consider.

First, get clear about where you want your sitter to drive your children, and why. Are these drives absolutely necessary? If they are for appointments, can they be re-arranged so you can drive them yourself? If your children are missing the bus home because of an after-school activity, is the activity absolutely necessary? It's not that babysitters will be any less careful behind the wheel than you would be, of course, but the question is, how will you feel if your children and your babysitter are in an accident? What if the accident is the babysitter's fault and your children are injured? And what if the accident wasn't her fault at all, but she is gravely injured, or, heaven forbid, even paralyzed or killed?

Asking your babysitter to get behind the wheel for the sake of relatively unimportant reasons is a grave undertaking. You should definitely consult your insurance company for advice and, most probably, even greater coverage to account for this situation. Likewise, if you are asking your babysitter to sit for you on a regular, ongoing basis, you may also be liable for her tax and even workman's compensation if she is injured on the job.

If, after reading this far, you decide to still let your sitter drive your children places, then there are some things that you absolutely should discuss with her before letting her get in the car. First, she should show you that she has a full and unrestricted license; you would be wise to make a photocopy or a scan of her license for extra protection. With her name and license number, most state Department of Motor Vehicles will print out a drivers record for you for a nominal charge-you should definitely study this carefully before giving her the keys. If she has a record of reckless driving or driving under the influence, get another sitter, fast!

Second, you should thoroughly review with her the safety features of the car: car seats and how they work with safety belts, how the lights and emergency flashers operate, and what you have in the trunk to be used for an emergency. It is strongly suggested that you have some other breakdown service; she can program the number of the breakdown service into her cellphone, and make a note of your account number and account holder's name, so they won't refuse to come pick her and your children up from the side of the road.

Third, make sure your tank has sufficient gas in it for the sitter's round-trip journey with your children. You do not want to put her in the awkward and annoying position of needing to fill up your tank with her own money, nor do you want to risk her running out of gas on the road. Not only is this dangerous for her and the children, but also running the gas tank to complete empty can throw sludge up into your engine, which wreaks havoc on your car.

- Suppress the discouraged feeling by keeping positive sign boards and try to do meditation to clear your depression.
- Do eat balanced meals and healthy food.
- Do get enough sleep. Some women sleep more during depression.
- Do take your medicine and/or go to counseling as often as your doctor tells you to. Avoid self medication.

Does depression affect my unborn baby?

Yes. It has been proved by many research that depression can affect the growth of the fetus. Mothers-to-be who are depressed during pregnancy are more likely to have babies sleep problem during their 18th month says O'Connor a research expert.

In his recent research, O'Connor says, follow others' research showing that mothers who report being stressed during pregnancy have children with higher rates of behavioral problems, as well as hyperactivity and anxiety.

Perhaps the most important thing to concentrate on at first is sleeping well. That lump isn't very comfortable by the third trimester. It is impossible to sleep on your belly, when you sleep on your side, your belly falls forward and sinks into the mattress (painful!), and you are left with one option: sleeping on your back. Less than 15% of people are able to fall asleep while lying on their back. Breathing passages are more likely to get clogged, causing snoring, which often wakes you up right after you fall asleep. Most people fall asleep on one side or the other.

The solution to this is a pregnancy pillow. Whether you need a full-body sleeping bean bag or a simple bed wedge, pregnancy pillows come in many shapes and sizes to suit your needs. Their purpose is to provide support for your belly and back during sleep, which eliminates most of the back pain involved from sleeping in a bad position. Cradle pillows are designed to support the neck, and pregnancy cradle pillows are designed to be placed under the belly while lying on your side for support. Full length body pillows support the neck, belly, and hips while lying on your side, placing your body in the best angle to sleep in. Placing a lumbar back support pillow under the small of your back when sleeping will provide the best support for your lower spine while sleeping on your back, which relieves the stress of all that extra belly weight carried during the day.

Legs, ankles, and feet are very susceptible to swelling during the third trimester of your pregnancy. Women who spend hours standing up while pregnant are twice as likely to have swollen ankles as women who sit down most of the day. During pregnancy, tired feet and ankles can be extremely stressful on the body. It can feel like a thousand throbbing drums are beating in your legs, and all you can do is dream about your couch or bed and lifting your legs for a very long time by the end of a long day.

To avoid tired feet and legs, use an anti fatigue mat at home and in the office. anti fatigue mats filled with special gel provide excellent support for your legs and feet, and are especially effective when you stand for a long period of time. A good ergonomic keyboard and mouse will relieve the tension in the neck and shoulders, not to mention the dreaded carpal tunnel syndrome (as if you really need that on top of everything?). Make sure your monitor is adjusted properly, and that your desk is at the correct height. It is difficult enough to type while very pregnant without your desk being too low or too high.

It is possible to work through your pregnancy in relative comfort. If you sleep well, if your body is supported properly throughout the day, and if pressure is relieved from your feet and legs, you may be able to sail through your pregnancy just like those few lucky women out there who are always glowing with good health.

Risks of Eating Disorder During Pregnancy

A healthy, well-balanced diet keeps the mother's strength up, fights off postpartum depression and increases the ability for the mother to produce viable breast milk. Remember, breast milk is the infant's only way to receive nutrition and any deficiencies are passed from mother to baby.

For any woman fighting an eating disorder, it is extremely difficult. She is already undergoing high amounts of emotional, mental and physical stress. Adding a pregnancy or baby to the mix could heighten this stress and hinder; or even halt recovery. Having a baby is a big step; make sure you are well into recovery and ready. Remember, a baby will not just bring you additional joy and laughter in your life, but they also bring a lot of responsibilities and duties. Do not get pregnant just because you need to be loved by someone. A baby will need your care and attention and he/she will need you to be strong and healthy.

great advantage. For a spouse who has never worked a "paid job" or for one who has earned
insufficient credits to qualify for their own "worker" benefit, they are eligible to receive 50% of
the eligible worker spouse's full benefit. This is known as the "spousal benefit". Or, if you have
worked but your spouse's benefit is higher than yours, then you can claim the aforementioned
spousal benefit.

For widows that have lost their husbands, the wife can receive her own worker benefit or 100%
of the husband's benefit, whichever is greater. A surviving spouse who has reached full
retirement age (65 to 67 depending on birth year) is eligible for full benefits. Reduced benefits
(roughly 72% of the full benefit amount) are also available for a surviving spouse as early as
age 60. However, starting in 2005, the age at which the 100% widow's benefit is payable will
be gradually increased to age 66 by 2011 and age 67 in 2029. Widows with minor or disabled
children qualify for more benefits, but it that discussion is beyond the scope of this article.

A word of warning, if you remarry before age 60, you cannot receive widow's benefits as long
as that marriage is in effect. If you remarry after age 60, you will continue to receive your
(husband's) benefits.

Employer Retirement Accounts

Defined Contribution Plans

Retirement benefits, for many couples today, are often the most substantial assets in the
marital estate. This asset can play an integral role in the life of both a widow and divorcee.

The distribution options available for employer sponsored qualified plans may vary. While
some plans allow for the beneficiaries to receive distributions over time (like in the survivor
annuity options to be discussed in the next section), others may be forced to pay distributions
to the surviving spouse all at once. The spouse, however, can roll over the entire distribution
into her own plan, unless the distribution is not an eligible rollover distribution for some other
reason (ie. to the extent it is a required distribution).

Defined Benefit Plans

Defined benefit plans provide monthly income for the life of the participant. Traditionally,
pension plan benefits were paid to the retired worker upon separation from service as a single
life annuity. Upon the workers death, benefits would stop; leaving many surviving spouses
(mostly women) without that stream of income.

In 1984, ERISA updated its joint-and-survivor law and made the 50% joint-and-survivor benefit
the standard benefit for married individuals, whereby 50% of your monthly annuity would be
paid to your annuity beneficiary upon your death. In the past, the retiree could choose to
provide survivor benefits; however, under the revised law, written consent of the spouse is
needed to decline the 50% joint-and-survivor benefit.

Many plans offer 50% and 100% percent joint-and-survivor options. The 100% joint and
survivor option is a type of annuity takes into account the combined life expectancy of the
worker and the spouse, and often is paid out over a longer period of time, the worker's monthly
pension payment is usually less than it would have been if the worker and the spouse had
declined the survivor benefit. So, under the 100% percent option, the joint benefit is reduced
more than under the 50% percent option, but there is no reduction in benefits after the retiree
dies, that is, the surviving spouse receives 100% of the joint benefit.

Another factor to consider is the fact that many workers nowadays change careers and/or
employers several times throughout their working years. Oftentimes, employees may find
themselves vested in pension plans unbeknownst to them (or their spouse). Surviving spouses
are encouraged to inquire about any pension benefits due to them at both existing and
previous employers where their husbands have worked.

IRA's

The cash flow options under the IRA rules depend on the type of beneficiary identified in the
account. Surviving spouses have the greatest flexibility in terms of their distribution options.

Inheriting an IRA from a spouse gives you flexibility not available to other beneficiaries.
You can put the IRA in your name or you can roll over the funds into an IRA you have already
set up. The IRS will treat this as if the inherited IRA assets were yours all along.

Assuming that you are younger than 70 ½, as a spouse not only are you not required to take
any distributions from the inherited money, but it also means that you can make additional
contributions to the IRA (assuming you qualify). Converting the IRA into your name will also
allow you determine your own beneficiary.

For surviving spouses who are younger than 59 ½ and depend on the income from the IRA for
survival, leaving the IRA in your spouse's name is the best option. It allows you to take
distributions without incurring a 10% early withdrawal penalty. But, because the IRA remains in
your deceased spouse's name, the future beneficiaries cannot be changed.

As a spousal heir, one of the flexibilities of an inherited IRA is that you can split the account.
So, let's say you needed some current income from the account (which you will be forced to
take for the rest of your life), but don't want to exhaust the whole account, you can split the
inherited account into one that generates income (stays in deceased spouse's name) and the
other (converted to your own IRA account) to grow, deferring distributions until your RMD age.

Insurance Policies

Life insurance proceeds can be one of the single biggest financial benefits for a survivor
beneficiary. The obvious beneficiary of a life insurance policy is likely to be a surviving spouse
(and children, if applicable), whether directly or through a trust. Most life insurance policies are
purchased outright by the individuals. But, life insurance benefits are also often available
through employers. Widows should check with the decedent's employer, previous employers,
mortgage lenders, professional organizations and unions to ensure that they claim any benefits
owed to them.

In summary, when it comes to money matters, all options and resources must be carefully
considered. Any woman dealing with the harsh reality of a husband's death is well advised to
seek professional guidance. In addition to their financial planner, legal advice from an estate
planning attorney to help them assess their needs and the most appropriate distribution
strategies going forward. The right decisions and proper planning can make a world of
difference in your financial survival.

For one thing, the bromelain in pineapple, which is a nutrient that it contains in higher concentration than pretty much every other food, is said to be an anti-inflammatory and also to increase cervical mucus. The increase in cervical mucus can make the uterus more "sticky," which can lead to increased rates of implantation. The most bromelain in the pineapple is found near the core, so many acupuncturists and natural therapists recommend eating the whole pineapple including the core.

One thing to note, though, is that there is also some evidence that pineapple juice in high quantities can cause cramps and can even cause spontaneous abortion. There's pretty much no danger of this if you eat just a cup of actual pineapple each day - which will be less concentrated than the juice squeezed out of the pulp. Just be sure that you keep things in balance and don't overdo it.

Here's an interesting fertility fact: the Ibeji tribe in Nigeria eats yams pretty much every day, and they have the highest rate of fraternal twins in the world. Wild yams - not to be confused with North American sweet potatoes, which are sometimes called yams - have chemicals in them similar to estrogen and progesterone. They can help a woman produce more eggs during her cycle, which is one reason the Ibeji tribe has such a high incidence of twins, and they can also help with implantation by boosting a woman's levels of progesterone in her first trimester.

While all of these foods have been shown to help with implantation during IVF, the most important thing that you can do is to eat a healthy, balanced diet on a regular basis. Slow - Slowly inhale air through your nostrils while counting to 5; Hold in that breath for about 5 seconds; Then exhale slowly through your mouth while counting down from 5 - 1. While doing this you might want to repeat the word "relax...relax..." silently. Continue this technique for about 5 minutes and practice it daily.

4. I've Heard About Prenatal Yoga, What Is It Exactly?

Health Insurance - Piece the Family Together by Breaking Up the Pieces


Buying health insurance as a family is like sitting around the coffee table putting a puzzle together. But instead of one possible outcome, the pieces can fit together to make an album of finished puzzle pictures. The strategy, however, is no different. The key to completing the puzzle is to find the corner pieces or flat-sided pieces so you can fill in the middle accordingly.

The corner pieces to your health insurance puzzle represent the make-up of your family. How many members are there and what is your budget? A Family Health Insurance plan can start with just two people. It is very common for a party of two or more to purchase a "Family" health insurance policy assuming their will be value-added benefits in terms of cost and coverage. In fact, the opposite is usually true. The overall benefits might be greater when you split the plan up if your family has three or less members.

Often times a family policy for two people can cost more in monthly premium than two separate policies combined. Plus, the deductibles and limits per person don't change. A family of three will be somewhat similar. A family can really start to save money on purchasing a plan together when there are four or more members because the monthly premium stays the same after three family members and the combined yearly deductible can decrease.

Plans that don't include maternity benefits can cost much less in monthly premium, often have low or NO deductibles, and can usually only be purchased by an individual. The husband must take care of his wife and make her happy while carrying because even a small depression in the mother will affect the child inside. Becoming a mother is a sheer joy. Every woman's life is fulfilled only after giving birth to a child.

First of all a new mother must be advised by her friends and family members. A new mother requires a hundred percent support from her family members and husband. During the early stage, the baby must be taken care of properly. The mother must be in complete rest during the early stages of the baby's growth. As the child grows inside there will be some changes in body of the mother.

During pregnancy period the lady must have in mind that she is not one person but two. The mother must in take all nutritious food for those nine months for good health of the baby. Maintenance of good health, proper rest and exercises that are advised by the doctor must be carried out properly.

Proper food habits must be practiced during pregnancy like milk products, fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, and beans etc. which will add vitamins and minerals that are required for the development of the baby. Folic acid is a vitamin that is very much essential for the women during both before and after pregnancy. Foods that contain iron are more important for the growing baby. Vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, and tomatoes contain iron content.

Both the men and women must practice a well balanced diet once they plan for baby. Both must take vitamins and minerals rich food like vegetables, fruits, and green leaves. Vitamin E and Vitamin C are very important. The men must be away from drugs, alcohols and cigarettes. Proper vaccination before pregnancy is very important. Both must be mentally prepared and should follow the advice of the doctor properly to give birth for a healthy child.
