Unmarried Fathers - Do You Know Your Rights?


Some of the most heartbreaking cases I've had are those of fathers not married to their child's mother and not realizing that they have to take steps to secure their legal rights to the child. In Georgia, an unmarried father has no rights to his child at all unless and until he either marries the mother and publicly claims the child as his own and gives the child his name or files a petition in court to legitimate the child. Until one of these two events happen, the mother has all parental control over the child and the father has no rights.

I have had several cases in which the unmarried parents of a child live together for a period of time as a family, and then the parents decide to separate. In Georgia, if the father has not legitimated his child, he has no rights and the mother legally can prevent the father from contact with the child. While this may seem morally wrong, it is legally permissible.

What can unmarried fathers in Georgia do in order to protect their rights? As soon as the child is born the father should file a petition to legitimate the child; he should do this regardless of whether he is living with the child's mother. If there is any doubt as to paternity, a DNA test should be completed prior to the filing of the legitimation petition.

Custody, parenting time (visitation), and child support can be addressed in a Georgia legitimation action. In Georgia an unmarried father of a child can secure his custodial rights (including parenting time) by filing a petition for legitimation; doing so will provide the father with custodial rights and a court-ordered parenting time schedule that the father may rely on even in periods of disagreement with the child's mother. Upon receiving an order of legitimation, the biological father of a child is recognized as the legal father and stands on the same legal footing as the mother in regard to custodial and parenting time rights.

In Georgia, there is a difference between being the biological father and the legal father of a child. Having the status of only the biological father does not provide the father with any rights. It does not matter if the father paid for the pregnancy and maternity care of the mother, was at the birth of the child, and signed the birth certificate. It does not matter if the parents lived together as a family with the child and the father supported the mother and child for several years. If the father does not marry the mother, the only means by which the father can have any legal rights to the child is to file a legitimation petition. A child who has been legitimated by his or her father may inherit from the father, whereas a child that has not been legitimated might not legally be able to inherit from the father; this is extremely important legal distinction that could have unintended or devastating consequences.

At a minimum, a biological father in Georgia should list his name on the putative father registry with the Department of Human Resources/Vital Records. By taking that act, the biological father can at least ensure that no legal action such as adoption can be taken by another party without notice to the father. A listing on the putative father registry does not provide legal rights as far as custody and parenting time, but it does prevent legal action regarding the child to be taken without notice to the father. In order to successfully object to any such legal action once he has notice, the father would likely have to follow through with a legitimation petition, but at least he will have the opportunity to protect his rights.

A biological fatherin Georgia does not have an absolute right to legitimate his child. It is possible for a father to lose his right to legitimate his child if he waits too long in order to procure his legal rights. There is no set time limit after which a father automatically loses his rights, but the longer the father goes without legitimating the child the higher the risk that he has abandoned his opportunity interest to develop a relationship with the child, and his legitimation petition could be denied.

An unmarried father in Georgia who wishes to have legal rights to his child and to stand on the same legal ground with the mother regarding custody and parenting time must file a legitimation petition, and should do so immediately after the child's birth regardless of his relationship with the mother or the fact that he might be living with and/or supporting the child. Biological fathers of children born out of wedlock should seek legal advice as soon as possible in order to protect their rights and make sure that they are legally able to maintain their relationship with the child.

Lupus and Pregnancy - What to Consider Before You Decide to Have a Baby


If you are living with lupus and contemplating having a baby there are a lot of questions you are going to want to address.

    -Is it safe to have a baby if I have lupus?

    -Will my baby get lupus too?

    -Will getting pregnant cause a lupus flare? When is the best time to get pregnant?

    -Can my baby be born naturally?

    -Can I breast feed?

    -Is there a greater likelihood of miscarriage?

    -What is toxemia of pregnancy?

    -Is there something I should do to help the pregnancy process?

    -I am afraid I will get a flare from being pregnant. What if I can not take care of my child?

This article will address some of the most common questions addressed above. (Stay tuned for part 2 to follow).

1. Is it safe to have a baby if I have lupus?

During the early seventies, women were told if they had lupus they should not get pregnant. Since those days, treatment and support for lupus patients have changed however it is still an important question that must be addressed, looking at your specific illness, needs and risk factors.

Because lupus is a disease that strikes young women, predominantly in their childbearing years, pregnancy is a big concern as you well imagine. However, for most women living with lupus a successful pregnancy is possible. That being said there are 'pregnancy dos and don'ts' that you must follow during your pregnancy to avoid complications.

Here are some suggestions to support yourself before and during pregnancy:



    Carefully plan your pregnancy, taking into consideration all of your needs. (For example, sufficient time off of work, support taking care of your child, sufficient time for rest, daily chores support, a house cleaner to do the most strenuous work, sufficient funds to allow for extra costs such as a nanny for the first few months etc.)

    Ideally, it is best that your lupus be under control or in remission for at least 6 months before you get pregnant.

    Have a strong support system in place you can rely on (For example, during a postpartum period, a stressful period or just coping with life changes etc.).

    Keep a diligent record of your condition, symptoms and health fluctuations.

    Plan your calendar in advance to ensure all of your necessary activities are taken care of well in advance to avoid stress. (For example, preparing the baby's room, collecting the necessary baby items such as car seats, strollers, etc. well in advance to avoid undue stress and rushing).

    Create a stress-free process as much as possible to support and maintain a healthy immune system, including dietary needs. (For example, an organic foods delivery system is a great way to avoid regular grocery trips).

    Take extra care of your health needs, following a nutritious healthy lupus diet, with supportive supplements (such as essential fatty acids to naturally reduce inflammation) and prepare your meals in advance (store extra meals in the freezer) to avoid extra work in the kitchen.

    Avoid environmental toxins (such as painting fumes etc.) and be extra careful with situations that don't support wellness (such as cleaning products, second hand smoke or other noxious items).


Lupus pregnancies are considered high risk!

Being pregnant while living with lupus is considered a high-risk pregnancy. As mentioned above, it is especially important that you find an obstetrician (OB) who is experienced in managing high-risk pregnancies and someone you feel confident in. This person may or may not be your regular OB; however having an expert on hand (at minimum for a second opinion) is highly advisable

The biggest risk to your baby is premature birth. Births before 36 weeks are considered premature.

Here are some statistics concerning the risks of pregnancy and lupus:

About 50% of lupus pregnancies end before 40 weeks (9 months), usually because of the complications previously discussed.Babies born after 30 weeks, or weighing more than 3 pounds, usually do well and grow normally Premature babies may have these problems, but in modern neonatal units they can be easily treated:

-Difficulty breathing

-Developing jaundice

-Becoming anemic

Even babies as small as 1 pound, 4 ounces have survived and have been healthy in every way; but the outcome is uncertain for babies of this size. There is one congenital abnormality that occurs only to babies of lupus mothers (neonatal lupus, described below)There is no unusual frequency of mental retardation in babies of lupus mothers

Of course, the most important question lupus patients as is: will my baby be ok? The answer is, in most cases, yes. Babies born to women living with lupus have no greater chance of birth defects or mental retardation than any other baby.

Approximately 3% of babies born to moms with lupus will also have neonatal lupus. This will include temporary rash and abnormal blood counts. This usually will disappear by the time the child is between 3 and 6 months old and will not recur.About 50% of babies with neonatal lupus are born with a heart condition. This condition is typically permanent and treatable with a pacemaker. You should discuss this possibility with your doctor.About 33% of people with lupus have an antibody known as the anti-Ro, or anti-SSA, antibody.About 10% of women with anti-Ro antibodies-about 3% of all women with lupus-will have a baby with a syndrome known as "neonatal lupus."

Neonatal lupus is not SLE. Neonatal lupus consists of:

-A transient rash

-Transient blood count abnormalities

-Sometimes a special type of heart beat abnormality. If the heart beat abnormality occurs, which is very rare, it is treatable but it is permanent.

Neonatal lupus is the only type of congenital abnormality found in children of mothers with lupus.

For babies with neonatal lupus who do not have the heart problem, there is no trace of the disease by 3-6 months of age, and it does not recur. Even babies with heart beat abnormality problems grow normally. If a mother has had one child with neonatal lupus, there is about a 25% chance of having another child with the same problem.

There is only a small chance that the child will develop systemic lupus erythematosus later in life.

3. Will getting pregnant cause a lupus flare?

Flares during pregnancy are most common during the first or second trimester or during the first few months following delivery.

Stress (both chronic and acute) plays a significant role in increasing your risk of a flare, so you must do all that you can to manage it.

The presence of lupus nephritis before conception also increases the chance of having complications during pregnancy. These concerns should be discussed with your doctor, as each person's situation and physical constitution is very different.

Most flares that do occur are mild and treated easily with corticosteroids.

The most common symptoms of these flares are:

-Arthritis

-Rash

-Fatigue

Remember, in some situations a flare is difficult to differentiate between lupus and pregnancy.

Certain abnormalities in lupus laboratory tests may be due to pregnancy rather than to lupus:

Approximately 33% of women with lupus will have a decrease in platelet count during pregnancyAbout 20% of women with lupus will have an increase in protein in the urine, or new occurrence of protein in the urine

These levels usually recover after delivery

4. When Is The Best Time To Get Pregnant?

The answer is simple: when you are at your healthiest.

Women in lupus remission have much less trouble than do women with active disease. It is important to remember that woman who conceive after 5 to 6 months of remission are less likely to experience a lupus flare than those who get pregnant while in a current flare.

Good health rules are essential:

-Eat well; you must follow a healthy diet for lupus (see site below for a specific diet for lupus guidelines)

-Take medications as prescribed

-Visit your doctor(s) regularly

-Don't smoke

-Don't drink

-Certainly don't use recreational drugs

-Listen to your body and follow its needs, (pushing through pain or fatigue is not advised, get the rest your body needs)

When you are in remission there is every reason to be hopeful that you can conceive a healthy child and maintain your health, especially if you are diligent with your health and get the support of medical (and alternative) health specialists.

Your delivery should also be in a hospital, so you have access to specialized care and equipment you or your baby may need.

Lupus pregnancies are considered high risk. You should not attempt home delivery or be overly concerned about natural delivery, since complications during delivery can occur.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD as it is known for short, is used for the identification of genetic defects in embryos that are created using in vitro fertilization or other forms of assisted reproductive technologies. As we have been raised, we have been taught to view the world in certain ways and we hold beliefs and expectations about how life is 'supposed to go'. We learn this predominantly from our parents or primary care givers, but also from other family, culture, religion, media, education, peers and other major influences in our lives. In this 'get your life right' world, we are also taught that our self-worth is dependent on what we do, are and have, so if we are not living up to these expectations then we are taught that we are not as worthy as we could be. We learnt to rate our self-worth as being more or less and we attach it to what we believe is the 'right path for our lives.

Somebody with postpartum depression believes that their worth has diminished to the point of being a complete failure and they feel like they just could not be bothered trying anymore. This is because they have perceived the events in their life to be reflective of their self-worth. They have attached their self-worth to how their life unfolds.

The answers to stopping postpartum depression, or any stress related disorder, is to change the way you view your life and to learn an accurate view of your self-worth. Understanding why you are worthy just the way you are is learning how to stop attaching your worth to getting life to go 'right', will result in the demise of your depression.

According to Embracing Motherhood, an organisation that supports mums after giving birth, most new mums will go through dramatic changes both emotionally and physically before, during and after the birth process. The more mums look after themselves, the greater their chances of a recovery in both areas.

It is the norm in our culture for the attention to move away from the mum and onto the new born baby after childbirth, often to the detriment of the mum. In traditional cultures within Asia, South America, the Middle East and India there is recognition that mums will need a longer period of time to rest and recover after childbirth. This can be anywhere from a few weeks up to a few months for their rest and recovery.

"A woman's body can take as long to recover as it does to make a baby: but in particular, the six week postnatal period is extremely important for supporting new mums back to health," says Ms Flack from Embracing Motherhood. Amy Hopes, wife of Grinspoon drummer Kristian, recently undertook the 30 day postnatal recovery program with Embracing Motherhood, after giving birth to her first child in September last year. The aim of the postnatal recovery program is to support mums in getting their body and mind back to a full recovery. Amy feels her inexperience is typical of most first time mums. "I had the perfect pregnancy and presumed I would have the perfect birth. But I was in for a big shock. I had a terrible, gruelling 36 hour labour. In the end, the doctors had to break my waters and use suction to get the baby out. I was very traumatised by it and can really only now, after 4 months, start to re-live it in my mind."

Amy found it shocking that professionals encouraged her not to talk about her traumatic birth, suggesting that she would upset other first time mums. "When I went to see the midwife I burst into tears, I was so overwhelmed. The midwife said, "Don't tell other mums, you'll only put them off," which was completely shocking to me. I think mums really need to know and understand what can happen both physically and mentally. It is not focusing on the negative, but preparing yourself for what might happen."

Surprising for Amy, it was the psychological impact of childbirth that was most challenging. "Physically, I recovered well and my postnatal program was instrumental in that smooth recovery. I was very healthy and fit before I gave birth too, doing yoga exercises each day and I think this helped."

For a new mum, a feeling of isolation is inevitable. "The most important thing is knowing that someone is looking out for you and you are not on your own," says 32 year old Amy. "The problem is that if you do gain a lot of weight and you don't bounce back easily, you are stuck at home and can't get out to do any exercise. Then your weight gain can start to spiral. I think how fit and healthy you are before the baby comes has a lot to do with it."

Weightwatchers Australia recommends that you gain between 11-16 kilos during your pregnancy and advises that too much weight gain affects your ability to bounce back after birth. "On average, after the birthing process it is around .5 to 3 kilos that women struggle to lose, although some hold on to a lot more weight. Coming into pregnancy with excess weight and gaining a lot of weight during pregnancy can make it harder to lose weight afterwards." Weightwatchers suggest that achieving a healthy pre-pregnancy weight, not gaining too much weight during pregnancy, making wise food choices and getting plenty of exercise in the months following delivery, are all useful strategies for maintaining a healthy weight throughout the child-bearing years."

"If you put in the effort, you will see your post baby body start to take shape again," says personal trainer Adriana Solorzano from Optimum Personal Training. "Much of the recovery process is tied in with the mum's body type and her level of fitness and health during the pregnancy. If you've really embraced the 'eating for two' concept, it is likely you have developed some bad eating habits during your pregnancy. Many mums think the weight will fall off but bad eating habits will make it hard to lose weight, especially when you are at home with your baby and are unable to get out and exercise. The isolation and uncertainty can make new mums comfort eat too. When I get new mums to keep a food diary, they are often shocked by how much their eating habits have changed."

I started my journey with baby massage last year when majority of my friends became first-time parents.

Since then I have never looked back and have been touched by the uniqueness of the baby massage playing a very important part in bonding process. Touch is the first sense developed and it is the main way the baby is learning about the "outside womb" world through.

From my own practice I can say that intentional mother-baby interaction and positive touch can be only beneficial for both sides.

After working with one of the mother who was suffering from post-natal depression I came to the conclusion that infant massage classes should be offered as a part of treating post-natal depression.

My friend who had rather traumatic experience with giving birth and the fact her baby was not 100% healthy when born caused a lot of difficult time for her. Although she had a lot of family support she was not able to open herself towards her little girl. She felt like her emotion were blocked and she was unable to show live towards her baby the way she wanted.

Because I needed someone to practice with I just brought my doll and we started the journey. Firstly, my doll made her laugh which was a good sign and then when she started learning and practising the strokes she became hooked on baby massage.

Soon after Alex started regular massage sessions with Paula we both notice how the relation mother-baby as well as mother's mood has improved.

What to Expect When You're Expecting: Symptoms and Doctor-Approved Cures


No advice is better than speaking directly with your doctor when you have a symptom in your pregnancy that concerns you, but there are plenty of physical changes you can prepare for and mild symptoms that you can handle on your own. Since your body will go through nine months of creating a new person, arm yourself with this brief guide for what to expect and what are common, over-the-counter-cures that your doctor would approve.

First Trimester - Weeks 1 through 12

In your First Trimester of pregnancy, you likely realized you were pregnant when you missed a menstrual period, showing hormonal changes. More hormonal changes will continue, creating such symptoms as fatigue, breast tenderness, increased urination, fullness or mild aching in your lower abdomen, nausea and vomiting (that is, typical "morning sickness").

Dizziness and a light-headed feeling are common during the First Trimester since your blood pressure normally lowers in pregnancy. The dizziness may also be due to low blood sugar which can occur in pregnancy. To alleviate your dizziness, eat small frequent meals and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Also, don't make any sudden moves, especially avoid bending your head down and lifting it quickly. In work or exercise, change your head positions carefully.

Headaches can show up in the First Trimester and they are usually produced by increase in circulation that is experienced during this phase. Unless you have a history of migraines which you should discuss with your doctor, most headaches can be prevented. The treatment is much the same as for nausea and dizziness, that is, eat small frequent meals and drink 6 to 8 glasses of water throughout the day. This avoids headaches from hunger and dehydration. Your doctor-approved self-medication for this symptom is Tylenol.

Second Trimester - Weeks 13 through 27

During the Second Trimester of pregnancy you start to look pregnant as the "baby bump" shows! For many women, the Second Trimester is the easiest period. Breast tenderness and morning sickness ease or disappear. Even the pressure on your bladder may ease as your uterus grows and moves up out of the pelvis.

Nonetheless, throughout the Second Trimester you may feel a great assortment of symptoms such as breast changes, leg cramps, back pain, pelvic ache and hip pain, hemorrhoids and constipation, heartburn from gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also called GERD, nosebleeds and bleeding gums, hand pain, numbness, or carpal tunnel syndrome. You may see stretch marks and some skin changes, and you may even have Braxton Hicks contractions which are called "warm-up" contractions that don't lead to labor.

Heartburn can be treated by avoiding greasy, spicy foods, caffeine and chocolate. Avoid eating from 4 to 6 hours before going to bed and sleep with your head propped up with pillows. Your doctor-approved medications for this symptom are Mylanta, Maalox, Tums, Pepcid AC and Zantac.

Hemorrhoids can be avoided by preventing constipation. Here again treatment is assuring that you are drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day and adding more fiber in your diet. Your approved self-treatments for hemorrhoids include Tucks, Preparation H and Annusol Cream or suppositories.

Third Trimester - Weeks 28 to Birth

Possible symptoms from the Second Trimester can continue into the Third Trimester, such as the Braxton Hicks contractions, fatigue, heartburn, hemorrhoids and constipation. However, many bodily stresses develop from expansion of your baby and swelling of your body from fluid building up in your body. You will experience swelling of your feet and ankles, called edema, due to the extra pressure that your uterus places on your legs. Also, since your uterus is now just below your rib cage, your lungs have less room to expand and you likely will experience shortness of breath. In addition, you will have to urinate frequently due to your enlarged uterus and the pressure of your baby's head on your bladder.

Discomfort comes from your belly getting bigger and the fluid build-up in your body. This discomfort manifests as an assortment of aches and pains, pelvic ache and hip pain. You may even have hand pain, numbness, or hand weakness such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Back pain is your most common pain. It may be experienced throughout your pregnancy but likely will be more noticeable during the Third Trimester. Whether lower back or upper back pain, self-treatment includes keeping yourself well hydrated. Stretching exercises are useful and there are pregnancy belts that can help support your back. Hot water bottles, heating pads and massages also provide comforting relief. Doctor-approved medications include Tylenol or any acetaminophen product, and approved devices for self-treatment include heating pads (used on low settings) and maternity belts.

Take care! Back pain that occurs every 5-10 minutes may indicate pre-term labor and you should call your doctor immediately. Or, if your back pain is accompanied by a 100.4 F fever and you have some burning when you urinate, you may have a urinary tract infection and should call your doctor.

Often Insomnia is a result of the discomfort and back pain from the Third Trimester swelling. You will have difficulty finding a comfortable position for sleeping. Lying on your back interferes with blood circulation and lying on your stomach isn't an option. You will have to sleep on your side and use pillows to support your belly and place between your knees. Doctors suggest that it is best to lie on your left side, since lying on your right side and on your back increases the weight of your uterus, and this increased weight can partly block the large blood vessel in front of your backbone. Your doctor-approved self-medications for Insomnia include Tylenol PM, Benadryl and Unisom.

How to Deal with Common Illnesses During Pregnancy

If you are one of those women who don't approve of taking any medications whatsoever while you are pregnant, none of the over-the-counter measures will do for you, even if "doctor approved." You will refuse to take anything even for a common cold during pregnancy. Nonetheless, here are common ailments and over-the-counter medications which most doctors easily approve, and most women will find tolerable for themselves and their unborn baby.

Allergies and Sinusitis

Doctor-approved medications for pregnant women having allergy problems include Benadryl, Claritin, Claritin D, Tylenol Sinus, Actifed, Sudafed, Chlortrimetron, Zyrtec and Zyrtec D. If your nasal problems are due to sinusitis, take Saline Mist Nasal Spray, Benadryl, Chlortrimetron, plain Sudafed, Actifed, Tylenol Sinus or Vicks Nasal Spray.

Cold or Flu

While pregnant, if you have a cold or flu with accompanying sore throat, stuffiness, congestion, aches and sniffles, your doctor-approved medications include any cough lozenges, Tylenol Cold and Flu, Mucinex, Robitussin DM, Sudafed, Actifed, Dimetapp and Vicks Nasal Spray. Keep your thermometer handy and take your temperature often. If your temperature goes over 100.4 F, call your doctor. Sore throats, colds and coughs are due to a virus and most of the approved medications will ease the symptoms. Antibiotics will not help cure a cold or flu. However, if your nasal discharge turns a greenish color, or you have a temperature of more than 100.4 F, these indicate a bacterial infection. You likely need to take an antibiotic prescribed by your doctor.

Constipation, Diarrhea or Gas

If you develop constipation, drink 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. Eat fiber-rich foods like high-fiber cereals, crackers, beans, vegetables and fruits. Prunes and prune juice are always helpful. The doctor-approved supplements for pregnant women are Citracil, Metamucil, Colace, Konsul, Perdiem and Fiber-con. Approved medications are Milk of Magnesia and Ducolax pills or suppositories.

For diarrhea, it is important to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Diarrhea usually lasts less than 24 hours but if it persists or is accompanied by fever greater than 100.4 F, call your doctor. Approved medications are Imodium AD or Kaopectate, not Pepto-Bismo.

Excessive gas can be treated with Simethicon or Gas-Ex.

Medications not approved during pregnancy are Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin and Pepto-Bismo. Also diabetic pregnant women need to consult their doctors before taking any medications and check for sugar-free products. While medications change and new ones come on the market, it is always good to check which ones are approved for pregnant women. As your body goes through its nine months of changes, it's excellent to know what to take and what not to take. Then anticipate and have common home cures and over-the-counter, doctor-approved medications ready for your aches and pains, common illnesses and bodily stresses that will accompany carrying your little bundle, or "bump," of joy.

The doctor consult is the fist line of defense in staying safe while exercising. It should go without saying (but I'll say it anyway), high risk (extreme) sports are at the top of the 'No-No' list for pregnant women. Biking and jogging should not be started when pregnant although the jury is still out on whether to continue if you were already doing them. Generally the consensus seems to be that they are alright in moderation in the first trimester. Sit-ups, air bicycle and other exercises that require you to lay on your back, if done at all, should also be discontinued after the first trimester. Don't use saunas, hot-tubs, spas or other apparatus designed to alter your body temperature. Wear loose clothing, stay hydrated (lots and lots of water; before, during and after exercise) and don't exercise in heat or humidity. Never exercise to the point of exhaustion. If you can't speak normally while exercising, stop. Take frequent rest breaks and stop immediately if you experience pain especially in your middle (i.e. abdomen and back), fatigue, dizziness or other signs that your exercise is having adverse affects.

Tips on How New Mothers Can Banish Loneliness


One of the biggest problems you face as a new mother is the feeling of being isolated. Perhaps you are accustomed to interacting with others at work or perhaps you have a group of friends you're accustomed to seeing often. Then when you delivered your baby, you were surrounded by friends, family and other visitors.

Now, suddenly, it's just you and your baby. Your visitors have trailed off, your colleagues are busy with their jobs, your friends aren't used to modifying their plans to accommodate a baby, and you are left wondering if you will ever interact with another adult again. The transition from being socially engaged to being alone with your baby can feel overwhelming to a new mother. Sometimes the feelings of isolation can be compounded by other postpartum emotions. You want to be careful to make sure that you don't give in to your loneliness.

Finding a social support group, especially one made up of new moms, will allow you to share experiences and milestones. Additionally, you can seek feedback and affirmation on frustrations or concerns that you have. Even if you just laugh together about your new motherhood experiences, you will build your confidence and relieve stress.

If you don't have success in finding new friends right away, don't despair. Many new mothers are just like you: overwhelmed, busy, and unsure about where to look for support. Be tenacious in your efforts and they will pay off.
You can change feelings of isolation to elation, and loneliness to laugher.

Survival Tip 1
Join a play group. You are not alone in your feelings of solitude. Many new mothers experience feelings of isolation and loneliness. Don't worry; your baby doesn't have to be old enough to "play" in order for you to join a group. If you can't find one in your area, start one yourself.

Survival Tip 2
Start a new hobby. Explore something you've always wanted to try-pottery, painting, joining a walking group or a book club. Not only will you feel better because you're engaging with other adults in your day, but you will also feel more positive about yourself because you are creating something meaningful to you.

Survival Tip 3
Call your friends. Just because it seems as if they are moving on with their lives without you, doesn't mean they won't jump at the chance to have lunch with you or take a walk with you and your new baby. Sometimes taking a little bit of initiative is all it takes to rekindle a relationship.

Survival Tip 4
Volunteer in the nursery at a coop, a "mother's morning out," or in your church. You can keep your baby with you and at the same time socialize with other mothers who are volunteering or picking their children up. Very soon you'll meet women who are mothers, and just like you, they are looking for companionship. If you can't find a group like this, start your own babysitting exchange. You'll be able to have a few hours to yourself at the same time you're meeting new mothers, just like you.

Go to the park. You will not only enjoy the fresh air and the exercise, but you will also meet other mothers who feel just like you do. Be bold and strike up a conversation with another mother. Smile and make eye contact with everyone you meet.

Common Reasons For Pregnancy Nausea in Third Trimester


For most pregnant women, nausea and vomiting are most likely to develop in the first month or two of pregnancy and start tapering off by the end of the first trimester-by week 18 at the outside. But as many as 20 percent of women may find that their symptoms of pregnancy nausea lasting into the third trimester, and 5 percent experience nausea and vomiting right up to delivery.

For some women, morning sickness stops after a few weeks at the start of their pregnancy, only to return again around week 27 or after. Still other women have no nausea at all in early stages, and are quite surprised to find it developing in the last three months.

Of course, at any time, a sudden onset of nausea and vomiting can be due to a virus or other illness. Especially if it is accompanied by diarrhea, it could be the flu or food poisoning. If such symptoms are severe at any time during pregnancy, it's important to be wary of dehydration and make sure to replenish the fluids being lost.

Preeclampsia can cause strokes and kidney damage, liver failure, blot clots, fluid in the lungs, seizures, and even death of both the child and the mother.

There is one final factor that can lead to nausea in late pregnancy-though in this instance it is a bit easier to diagnose. If nausea, vomiting and diarrhea coincide with cramps, backache, pelvic pressure, and contractions occurring less than 10 minutes apart, labor has begun.

While not uncommon, then, nausea late in any pregnancy merits a consultation with your care provider. In most cases there are ordinary and harmless reasons for it, but there is an outside chance that is a symptom of one of these several serious illnesses that occasionally arise during the late weeks of pregnancy.
