Post Natal Depression (PND) - Will PND Woman Harm Their Baby?

Having a baby could be a challenging life experience to most moms. One of them is PND that stands for Postnatal Depression. Following childbirth, it is common for women to experience a period of low mood. The severity can vary from a mild (baby blues), through to PND and to the most severe but very rare postnatal psychosis.

Statistically, around 10% of women will experience PND. It is a depressive illness that occurs after having a baby. In most cases, PND will generally start within 1 month after giving birth, but records also show that some moms experienced PND around six months or even within the first week after giving birth. For most women, it passes quickly; for others, professional help is needed and without treatment, it can last for months or rarely years.

So far, expert still cannot find the exact cause of PND. Postnatal depression is most common after the first pregnancy. PND women have symptoms that are similar with ordinary depression although two of them are not the same, they are lack of confidence, anxiety, negative thoughts, difficulty sleeping, feelings of being unable to cope or that life is meaningless, loss of appetite, and so on. Theses will be explained further below.

There are some factors that give a woman more chances to experience Postnatal Depression. However your doctor can work with you to reduce the risk of getting it. Those factors are:

  • If you have previous record of PND with your previous pregnancies, you are at a very high risk of experiencing it again. Pay attention to any warning signs of depression recurring. It is the first step in preventing PND in this case.

  • If you have a depression during pregnancy and being treated but then you have to stop the medication in order to avoid side effects to your fetus, you might be in a risk of getting PND. In this case, you will need to restart the depression medication process after birth to prevent PND and that would mean there is a possibility that you cannot breast feed.

  • If you experienced bipolar depression in the past, you are at a high risk getting PND. Pay attention to any warning signs and by understanding what treatments to ease the bipolar depression would be important to prevent PND in this case.

Symptoms of Postnatal Depression

PND symptoms are very similar to "ordinary" depression, such as:

  • Irritable. You might have sensitive and irritated feelings. Although mostly it happens with your partner, sometimes you can have irritated feelings with your baby too.

  • Depressed. You may frequently feel low and unhappy during the day. It can be peak at certain times of the day. For example: in the mornings when you wake up or evenings when you are about to sleep. You may have hope from some good days but then are followed by bad days which make you despair.

  • Hard to Sleep. PND women can have insomnia. No matter how tired you are, you simply can't fall asleep.

  • Can't easily enjoy anything. You will find plain life. It is hard for you to enjoy or be interested in anything.

  • Guilty. PND like ordinary depression, changes the way you think and makes you see things negatively. Feeling of guilty, useless is most common in PND women.

  • Overloaded. PND can make you feel overloaded in everything. You may feel that you have no time in doing things and organize daily routine in your life especially with your baby.

  • Anxiety. You might worry too much about your baby. You might have feared that your baby will be harmed in some way that you don't want to leave your baby alone.

PND woman have a symptom of disorder that she tends to withdraw from people including her baby. PND mother might think that she does not have good relationship with her baby. She thinks that the relationship should happen immediately within first few days or weeks after birth or it will not happen at all.

It is normal in PND and does not mean that she is a bad mother. However, once the depression has gone, the mother will be able to feel her full range of emotions and can enjoy her baby more. During this time, she just needs some help and assurance from family and friends.

So, Will PND women harm their baby?

It is very common that depressed mothers often worry that they might harm their baby. It is very normal that through tiredness and desperation, you might have feeling to hit or shake your baby. This happens to mothers and also fathers and not only to those who has PND. The fact is that most of them would never act on them. But if you do feel this, tell someone. They might help you. Your health visitor or doctor will also be able to help you with this.

However, for those who have a history of being harmed, abused, mistreated when they were young may sometimes do harm their babies (battered babies) and this case does not relate directly to PND.

Very rarely a mother with PND may harm her baby. On the other hand, mothers may kill their babies before committing suicide thinking that it is better for both of them to be dead. Fortunately it is very unusual.

Just remember that PND is treatable illness and the sooner they are treated the better it will be. Speak with your family members or professional as soon as possible.

Some tips if you have PND

The most common in PND women is they feel embarrassed, ashamed, or guilty about feeling depressed that make them reluctant to talk about their problem with somebody.

Talking about the problem with somebody, such as a health professional, can be very helpful. Most PND mother often worry that people will see them as unfit parents.

Postnatal Depression or PND can happen to any woman. You and your baby don't have to suffer and it does not mean that you are a bad mum.

Here are some useful tips:

  • Rest as much as you can. Sleep when your baby sleeps.

  • Do not give too much pressure on yourself. Do as much as you can and rest. You can ask your partner, parents, other family members or even your friends to help you out with looking after your baby, household or other things surround you.

  • Talk about how you feel to your husband, partner, family members or trusted friends. Spend time with them.

  • Talk to other mothers so you can learn from their experiences.

  • Join parent group in your local community.Try not to spend a lot of time alone. You need to leave the house sometimes. Take a short walk might help you. Research says that the sun can help reduce depression.

In some cases, anti-depressants are necessary. Although this can affect breast milk, there are drugs that are safe. Talk to your doctor or midwife.

Finally, even if you have been depressed for a while, support, counseling and medication can all help you to get better. It's never too late.

Kangaroo Mother Care and Post Natal Depression: What Are World Leading Experts and Parents Saying?

World leading experts in both pregnancy and postpartum depression have been looking very seriously at the cause and effect of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on the depressive illness known as PND for some years. By all accounts it would appear that the general consensus from the experts is that the technique can be extremely effective in reducing the onset of PND in new moms.

Arising from the way that Kangaroos care for their newborn Joey for around four months after birth, in a pouch positioned just below the mother's chest, KMC is about skin-to-skin contact between mother and newborn baby. This same technique used immediately after childbirth for women, is having a resounding effect on both Mothers and their newborn baby's. In relation to PND, The increased hormone known as Oxytocin is thought to be at least partially responsible for the reduction in symptoms associated with PND.

Looking at the various studies that have been conducted over the years, it would be safe to say that the concept of KMC is working wonders in reducing and eliminating the stress and anxiety often experienced by new mom's. It does not matter if Kangaroo Mother Care is done intermittently or continuously, the benefits are amazing. This of course, in turn reduces the number of women, men and families suffering, as a result of postnatal depression.

There is no disputing from experts or mom's alike, that KMC definitely helps the bonding process between mother and baby, and this bonding process starts the very moment that a baby is conceived. It is also being shown and accepted that Kangaroo Mother Care reduces the symptoms often associated with PND, as much as KMC enhances the physiological stability in the baby. Interestingly, through KMC a Mothers growing awareness of her newborn baby's cues contributes to the possibility of sustained breastfeeding.

Studies have shown that there are no unwanted side effects from the implementation of KMC. Furthermore, KMC enhances bonding as well as reducing the symptoms of PND. These are just a few of the reasons why and the benefits of the introduction of KMC as soon as possible after birth. The great thing about introducing KMC immediately is that it does not interfere with further procedures that may be necessary after giving birth and should in most situations be the priority. Most procedures can be carried out unhampered by baby being skin-to-skin with mom. Kangaroo Mother Care should not only be introduced as soon as possible and there is also room for dad and other siblings to get involved in this process.

Study and research has been carried out around the world and in various demographics. People from both ends of the economic spectrum have been involved in Kangaroo Mother Care research, and there seems to be no apparent discrepancy in the benefits discovered. So, Kangaroo Mother Care is for every baby and every parent regardless of your location in the world.

This government website automatically works out whether you're eligible for any benefits. All you have to do is enter some details (such as how much you earn, your council tax rate, any savings you have) and see what you could have.

Want to Get Pregnant? Here's How

Have you and your partner decided that you want to get pregnant? It's an exciting decision, but not always simple to achieve. If you and your partner have been having unprotected sex without conceiving a baby, it is possible that you will need some help. For young couples, the American Association of Reproductive Medicine advises seeking professional help after one year. For couples over 35 years old, having a thorough checkup after three months is prudent.

Where Should I Go For Help?

There are many options when choosing which health care provider will best suit your needs. Most couples start with their gynecologist or obstetrician. These doctors are experts in handling female reproductive problems with the latest drugs and medical procedures. A common mistake is assuming that the woman is responsible for infertility. On the contrary, low sperm count, poor motility & inability to fertilize the egg will drastically decrease the chances of getting pregnant. If you want to get pregnant, relying on a gynecologist will not be enough.

What Other Options Are There?

The extremely focused field of study that gynecologists received in school can be a double edged blade, making it difficult for them to see infertility as part of the whole. Many times, conditions making it difficult to conceive or stay pregnant are symptoms of larger problems. Naturopathy is another option that you may wish to consider if you want to get pregnant. Naturopaths are equivalent to medical doctors with a four year post-graduate degree. They are legal everywhere in the United States and some states have begun to issue licensing. A naturopath can evaluate your family's needs, determining whether the infertility is part of a larger problem, and help you to resolve any health concerns that may be hindering the process.

3 Tips To Help You Get Pregnant

When you want to get pregnant, there are many things you can do before scheduling the appointments to get help. Here are a few tips for ways that you can increase your chances of getting pregnant quickly.

1. Most couples are able to get pregnant without any knowledge of the reproductive system. Once infertility complicates matters, though, even having a basic understanding of how pregnancy occurs will help. Eggs and sperm have limited viability, so timing intercourse properly is helpful. Learn to watch for signs of fertile cervical fluid and charting basal body temperature (BBT). If you need to get help, bringing the charts along will help your health care provider to properly diagnose the problem. The best book currently available is called Taking Charge Of Your Fertility. The author, Toni Wechsler, also has an inexpensive online service that will store and interpret the data for you, telling you the optimal days for trying to conceive.

2. Fertility in both men and women is affected by being physically fit. It isn't necessary to be the perfect size when you want to get pregnant, but weight does matter. Being underweight can cause ovulation to cease and obesity can cause problems with the embryo's implantation. Even the man's weight matters. Obese and underweight men have lower sperm counts than men in a healthy weight range.

3. Stress matters when you want to get pregnant. Stress has been shown to repress ovulation and alter the length of the menstrual cycle. There are some studies suggesting that stress can cause malformed sperm production or low sperm count. Cortisol, the hormone released in stressful situations, will affect production of other hormones. It may be difficult to sustain pregnancy past the first trimester during extreme stress.

When you want to get pregnant, there are lots of things you can do to make it happen faster. Take the time to work on getting fit, eating a well balanced diet and exercising. Losing or gaining a few pounds might help, but not at the expense of eating nutritious food. Chart your temperatures and if you end up needing to see a health care provider, this information will prove invaluable. Before you know it, you will be holding a baby of your own.

Natural Health Helps Improve in Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization can be an emotionally, physically, and financially exhausting experience for many couples, natural health can support you along the way. Couples, who choose in vitro fertilization as a way to have a baby, go through a lot financially, physically and emotionally. Natural health can assist in all three areas. By following very cost effective natural therapies you can increase your chances of success, which in turn will save you money. By following a healthy life style you can achieve a healthy pregnancy, prevent miscarriages and have an easier birth and postpartum experience. By learning how to deal with stress you will be able to manage parenting and adjusting to your new life with a baby.

Nutrition
Eat only organic fruits and vegetables. These are rich in minerals, vitamins and enzymes. Also they offer a wide range of anti-oxidants which will protect the eggs and sperm from damage. You can supplement with the following minerals and vitamins which have great anti-oxidant properties and also aid in fertility.

Detox
During the six week prior to starting your in vitro fertilization treatments. Try an herbal detox, which will eliminate toxins from your body. A detox is also useful in between cycles to aid your body cleanse after taking fertility medications. If you get pregnant avoid cleansing until after you stop nursing.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used for a very long time to treat women's health conditions. Today, it is gaining popularity very rapidly as an effective natural health therapy to be used in conjunction with conventional medicine for the treatment of infertility. Acupuncture helps reduce the side-effects of fertility medications. It also helps produce better quality follicles, enhance uterine blood flow and prevent miscarriages. For men, acupuncture helps improve the quality of sperm in morphology, motility and count.

Weight
Your weight plays a very important factor in your fertility. Before your in vitro fertilization cycles make sure your weight goals are reached. Infertility results from either weighing too little or too much. The relationship between weight and fertility lays in the fact that estrogen is stored in fat cells. If you have too much body fat, the body produces too much estrogen limiting your odds of getting pregnant. A woman with too little body fat can't produce enough estrogen and her reproductive cycle begins to shut down. In both cases the menstrual cycle is affected leading to anovulatory cycles, irregularities, luteal phase defect, and more.

Yoga
Fertility Yoga helps you relax and increases calmness to assist you when dealing with the stress of invasive in vitro fertilization treatments. If you are new to yoga either take a beginner's class or follow a DVD that teaches simple relaxing poses with meditation and visualization. Talk to your doctor before starting any exercise program. Certain yoga poses create hormonal balance and are especially designed to increase fertility. Also, make sure the pose you are executing is not contraindicated during pregnancy and menstruation. To not do poses that can compromise implantation like inverted poses. Talk to a qualified yoga therapist or to your fertility health care specialist. Learn the yoga breathing and practice it every day!

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy can be wonderful before and during pregnancy. It helps to alleviate the tension caused by stress through touch and pressure by sending positive impulses to the spinal cord. It reduces excess nerve activity within muscles and helps with the removal of toxins, which contribute to pain and stiffness in the muscles. Besides increasing muscle relaxation, massage therapy contributes to increase blood circulation to the reproductive organs stimulating the body's natural ability to ovulate. Make sure to look for a registered massage therapist who specializes in fertility and pregnancy massage.

Insurance For Contraception

Is our health care system biased when it comes to women? Some providers of health insurance cover prescribed drugs but rule out contraceptives for female workers. But isn't this norm myopic because pregnancies that are not wanted incur high costs, not only financially but also to the health. The universal health agenda of the United States should take care of this problem, which should also include insurance coverage for contraception. Imagine how Viagra is covered while birth control pills and the like are not, that is enough cause for concern.

The co-president of National Women's Law Center, Marcia Greenberger testified to the senate that accessibility to consistent contraceptives is indispensable to the health of women, that the negligence of insurance providers to cover it has long term consequences, not only to women's health but also to their children's health as well. Contraception is a basic & pressing need for the female employees and should not be neglected.

Pregnancy is a condition exclusive to the female species and contraceptives that require prescriptions are those that are for women's use. Thus, refusing to cover them puts women at a disadvantage translating into the unfair bias of insurance companies against a woman's necessity. Without contraception, women are forced to have an abortion which incurs higher health expenses, not to mention the physical strain that their body is subjected to, as well as the psychological effects it places on the emotions. This emotional anxiety should be comparable to the stress caused by impotence on men. But why is it that insurers cover only the use of Viagra?

If that argument is not enough to convince, then how about finances, contraception should be counted as preventive health care. The expenses involved in using contraceptives are very minimal compared to the price of: pre-natal check ups, ultra sound, vitamins, etc.; labor & delivery in a hospital including a few days stay for recovery, not to mention c-section cases; postnatal care including infant care; and many more health-related expenses associated with pregnancy.

Consequently, it all boils down to the old adage "prevention is better than the cure." A lot of expense can be saved if contraception is included in the coverage of insurance. The new health reform bill should include this issue in its entirety. Not only can we lessen the cost of protecting women's overall health but we can also ensure their reproductive health.

If equity isn't a convincing enough argument, then money should to it. Contraception can be considered preventative care. Dollars spent on contraception are nothing compared to the cost of pre-natal, labor, newborn care, and other pregnancy-related health coverage. Congress could act and demand that all insurance companies cover contraceptives for women, or we could switch to a national health plan that would cover all women. Either way, offering contraception as covered prescriptions results in less money spent and healthier women.

Alopecia - Concepts, Information, Causes, Prevention, and Treatment Options

Alopecia

1.-Concept
2.-Causes
3.-Types of alopecia
4.-Treatment

Concept

The term alopecia defines hair loss. It can be triggered by various causes. The life cycle of hair consists of three phases: the growth phase or anagen phase lasting 2 to 6 years, the intermediate phase or cagagen phase with a duration of 2 to 3 weeks, and lastly the dislodgement or falling phase, with a duration of three months. During this last phase it is normal for between 50 and 100 hairs to fall out a day. Baldness is generated when the transition phase (catagen phase) exceeds the growth phase (Anagen phase).

Causes Some of the factors that influence hair loss are:

o Seasons: Spring and autumn are the most common seasons for hair loss.
o Oral contraceptives: Hair loss can be accelerated by the effects of the male hormone contained in some contraceptives.
o Lack of iron: This problem is more common in women especially if they have heavy or long periods.
o Diet: vegetarians, people who have a low protein diet and patients with anorexia nervosa may be protein deficient. As a result, in about three months time there can be a massive loss of hair.
o Postpartum: after childbirth some hair may enter the resting phase and begin to fall out.
o Stress and illness: you can begin to lose hair after a stressful situation. A high fever, severe infections or chronic diseases can also cause hair loss.
o Medications: Some drugs used in chemotherapy cause hair to stop cell division. This can cause loss of up to 90% of hair, but in most cases the hair will begin to re-grow once the treatment ends.
o Heredity: baldness may be genetic.
o Burns and traumas.

Types of Alopecia

We can distinguish between different types of alopecia. The most common types include: Scar less Alopecia: -Androgenetic alopecia: Also known as common alopecia as it is the most frequent form of alopecia. Hair loss starts from age 18, and is apparent between the ages of 25 and 30. In this type of hair loss, lost hair is replaced by increasingly thinner and shorter hair follicles, and in some cases even transparent hair. This type of alopecia is inherited from both father and mother. In these cases there is an abundance of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone within the hair follicle. DHT causes the atrophy of the follicle, reducing the growth cycle. Although the follicle is technically alive, each time it grows back even smaller. Some follicles just die, but most are smaller, and fluffier.

As the Anagen phase remains very short, more hair begins to fall out, gradually thinning until it becomes so fine that it can not resist daily combing. Baldness turns a long, thick, pigmented hair into thin, clear and short hair. This type of hair loss has a very distinctive pattern in men (male pattern baldness) affecting primarily the area above the temples with a receding hair line, as well as thinning hair on crown of the head. In women, this type of alopecia usually starts between age 20 and 30, with a gradual thinning of hair all over the head, hair miniaturization, and a no receding of the hair line. About 2 out of every 3 men experience a significant negative impact on their self esteem due to alopecia.

-Alopecia diffusa: Characterized by thinning hair (acute or chronic) and is due to a cycle interruption of the follicular anagen phase or telogen phase. In this type of alopecia only the hair follicles of the scalp are affected. There is no change in hair follicles from other parts of the body. It affects both men and women.

Telogen Effluvium: Consists of sudden and widespread hair loss due to causes such as stress, fever, abortion, endocrinological diseases, infectious diseases, surgery, etc... It is the most common form of postpartum alopecia because after birth, much of the follicles enter the Telogen phase (30%) and in the end fall out. Normally appears to 2-3 months after delivery and returns spontaneously in a few months.

-Alopecia Areata: Characterized by a hair loss occurring in round smooth patches, that takes place in one or more limited areas of the scalp or body. Its origin is unclear, but more and more studies suggest that alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which the body produces antibodies against a part of the hair follicle. Stressful situations can also cause the appearance of this type of alopecia. Can occur in both men and women, but most often affects youth.

-Traumatic Alopecia: Produced by different physical traumas. This type of hair loss can be caused by the individual person (Trichotillomania) or pull or tension caused by tight hairstyles like braids, bows, etc ... Trichotillomania: Consists of compulsive hair pulling. Is often set before age 17, and may be due to a need to draw the attention or a nervous tic.

Scarring alopecia

-Infectious Alopecia: . Mycosis (kerion, candidiasis, favus) . Bacterial (syphilis, leprosy, necrotic acne) . Viral (herpes, chickenpox). Protozoal (Leishmaniasis)

- Traumatic Alopecia: . Traffic accidents . Ionizing Radiation (Therapeutic) . Thermal burns or frostbite.

- Chronic Inflammatory Dermatosis Alopecia: . Discoid Lupus Erythematosus . Lichen Planus Pilaris . Folliculitis Decalvans

Treatment

Alopecia treatments that stand out are: -Minoxidil. An oral medication used to control high blood pressure. Patients taking Minoxidil showed noticeable hair growth. Therefore, for over 10 years it has been used is used in topical solutions to the control hair loss. Today it is one of the most effective treatments of androgenetic alopecia and other types of hair loss, including alopecia areata patches, total scalp hair loss, or universal hair loss. Comment: Minoxidil solutions make the hair oilier, so the head should be washed more frequently and with a proper shampoo. It is advised to wash the hair 1-2 times a week. Some patients may experience transitional itching and slight flaking on treatment areas; this should not be a reason to stop the treatment. Contraindications: Allergy to Minoxidil or its transmitter (propylene). Pregnancy.

- Antiandrogens. Reduce the male hormone (DHT) that causes baldness. DHT is an androgen (male hormone) competing for a place in the hair follicle receptors. If follicle receptors are occupied by other agents, DHT cannot enter the hair follicle and therefore does not induce aggressive action. The problem is that by blocking DHT, elsewhere in the body signs of feminization may begin to show in men. In contrast, in women this block is less problematic.

Within this group we find Finasteride, a type II 5-alpha reductasa inhibitor. This makes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The type II 5-alpha reductase is located mainly in the follicles of the scalp and the urogenital tract. The inhibition of the type II enzyme prevents the destructive action of DHT in hair follicles.

- Surgical techniques: include hair transplants, grafts, implants, etc ...

Conclusion

Hereditary hair loss is not curable, but it is controllable, and the sooner be treated the better. Currently there is not a perfect treatment for androgenetic alopecia, but there are drugs that stop hair loss and prolong the life of hair follicles. We must consider the present and future hair treatments because hair needs living hair follicles. With baldness follicles are miniaturized and die after 5-10 years. With any treatment you will get better results with more follicles that remain alive. Many other hair problems are temporary and can be treated by dietary measures and other measures. In these cases, good dietary habits as well as eating supplements of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help to stop hair loss and regain normal growth after a few months. For more information about hair loss, consult your dermatologist, because skin diseases include diseases of the hair and nails. Do not be influenced by advertisements for "hair tonic" or by hairdressing specialists.
